Marcoiano offers concrete points of interest for nature, culture and history: municipal walking routes, church art and traces of older transport and pilgrimage history. The Festa Popolare adds a menu that was recorded for 2026. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding in advance which of these interests you want to shape your stay.

Routes and Historic Connections

One of the nine municipal walking routes, I Percorsi dell’Asfodelo, leads from Marcoiano via Castellana to Passo dell’Osteria Bruciata. For the pass, walkers can also turn onto Sentiero 50/a in the direction of Paracchia. The two references give different place names for a route to the pass. Check the trail conditions and any temporary diversions before setting out.

Passo dell’Osteria Bruciata is also part of the region’s older transport history: before 1309, Marcoiano was an important point of reference on the route over the pass, which provided access to Romagna. The same pass therefore appears both as a walking-route destination and in connection with a historic transport link.

Church Art and Historic Traces

Santa Maria a Marcoiano preserves the chapel of the Compagnia della SS. Vergine on its right side. A precise detail of the church is its square bell tower: of its three bells, two were cast in 1385 and 1585. The two dates are exactly two centuries apart.

A panel painting from the Florentine school comes from Santa Maria a Marcoiano and is now kept at the Museo d’arte sacra Beato Angelico in Vicchio. It depicts the enthroned Virgin and Child between Saints Macarius and Antony Abbot. This connects an artistic theme from Marcoiano with a named place of safekeeping outside the town.

Beyond the town centre lies the elevated site of Il Poggio. There, extensive remains of old buildings and remnants of a fortress belonging to the Cadolingi can be seen. The Oratorio di Ponte all’Olmo represents another part of the history: it was attached to the church of Santa Maria in 1568 and has long served as a place for pilgrims travelling north from the Florentine plain to rest and pray. Together, visible building remains and a historic pilgrimage function stand alongside the church’s works of art and architectural details.

Landscape and the Festa Popolare

Marcoiano can be reached via a municipal road that runs along the left bank of the Tavaiano stream through a largely unspoilt natural landscape of woodland and cultivated land. This landscape connection complements the walking route via Castellana and the pass: nature is both part of the described approach to the town and an attraction for walkers.

The menu for the 2026 Festa Popolare included tortelli, stewed wild boar, fried frogs and grilled meat. Live music and dancing with orchestras from the surrounding area were also planned for that edition. These details refer to 2026; the menu and programme may differ at later editions.

If you are looking for a hotel in Marcoiano, your own interests can help structure your choice: consider whether walking routes, church art and history, or attending an event will shape your stay, and compare the accommodation itself with your travel plans.
