Le Vedute – Cerbaie Forests and Historic Sites

The Cerbaie: Forest Landscape and Restored Trails

The Cerbaie forests are located in the municipality of Fucecchio, between the districts of Pinete, Torre, and Vedute. The Cerbaie are designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI). This means that a clearly defined protected area and natural landscape category forms part of the area's thematic context.

Nature enthusiasts will also find the area's distinctive flora noteworthy: Drosera Rotundifolia grows in the Cerbaie SCI. It is considered a carnivorous plant from the Ice Age. In addition, 7.5 kilometers of hiking trails have been restored in the Cerbaie forests. This documented trail network provides a separate point of interest for visitors who want to experience Le Vedute through more than just its buildings and history. The forests of the Ex Opera Pia Landini Marchiani were also the subject of a municipal project to enhance their tourism and recreational potential.

Villas, Chapels, and Places of Remembrance

A brick chapel was built in 1798 by the Benvenuti family from Fucecchio in the park of Villa di Poggio near Le Vedute. The chapel is dedicated to Saints SS. Candido e Teresia. Its origins connect the site with a specific family history and with the sacred architecture of the late 18th century.

An oratory adjoining Villa Bassi near Le Vedute was built in 1836 by Francesco Antonio Bassi. Between 1878 and 1880, it was extended to create a small sacristy. Villa Bassi itself also has a special biographical connection: it is associated with Indro Montanelli's childhood memories. Since 2011, concerts and events commemorating Indro Montanelli have been held at Villa Bassi.

Another cultural connection is particularly clearly defined in terms of timing. In December, Le Vedute's “Salotto Bono” reopens for a literary tea.

Archaeological Traces from the Paleolithic

Scattered stone artifacts and traces of human presence dating from the Middle and Upper Paleolithic have been found in the area of Le Vedute. The stated period ranges from 300,000 to 8,000. This gives Le Vedute an archaeological dimension that extends far beyond the more recent architectural history of its villas and chapels.

The Capanno del Banti complex near Le Vedute is also part of this thematic context. It is classified as an individual bivouac or hut floor dating from the period between the Late Gravettian and the Early Epigravettian. This offers you an exceptionally broad perspective on the history of the area: from Stone Age traces and sacred buildings to the places of remembrance and events associated with Indro Montanelli.
