A half-day in the car, an early Christian parish church and an annual festival give Pieve al Toppo clear points of interest for planning a trip. The third itinerary, “i nuclei di piano,” includes the town as a stop; the town’s name and medieval history offer a different focus from the drive. So when planning your stay in Tuscany, you can weigh up a driving tour, historical themes and a visit during the Fiera del Miele.

A half-day drive with several stops

The third itinerary, “i nuclei di piano,” passes through Pieve al Toppo, Tegoleto, Spoiano, Albergo, Badia al Pino and Viciomaggio. The drive is about 22 kilometres long and takes half a day in total. You can therefore plan it as a standalone half-day part of your trip, rather than setting aside a whole holiday day for it. You can reach Pieve al Toppo via State Road 73. The six named towns give the drive a clearly defined sequence. If you like to plan your time in Tuscany around several stops and a manageable time frame, you can build your tour around this route.

Church history and medieval connections

The name Pieve al Toppo derives from a rural parish church known as a pieve. The early Christian pieve had been abandoned by the mid-15th century. It was incorporated into the Church of S. Andrea di Oliveto. From 1906, the oratory was dedicated to Madonna del Conforto. The church’s history thus stretches from the early Christian pieve to a later dedication.

A medieval event is also connected with the town: in 1288, Guglielmino degli Ubertini’s army defeated the troops from Siena at Pieve al Toppo. This adds a different historical focus to the church tradition and gives you another specific point of interest to consider when planning your trip. The imposing Mugliano estate complex is also located near Pieve al Toppo. It is another named landmark in the area that you can take into account alongside the town’s history when planning a themed visit.

The Fiera del Miele in October

The Fiera del Miele takes place every year on the first Sunday in October on Via dei Boschi in Pieve al Toppo, in the forecourt of the Circolo. If you would like to visit the honey fair, plan around that Sunday and confirm the date for the relevant year. For the drive, you can set aside half a day in your itinerary. The festival date and the drive can therefore serve as different criteria when choosing your travel dates.

Planning access and travel time

As of 17 February 2025, the Pieve al Toppo locality was freely accessible to the public; access was available every day, around the clock. Check the current access conditions before your visit.
