Fresciano – Plateau, Churches and Historic Paths

Fresciano between Plateau and Cultural Heritage

Fresciano lies at 798 metres above sea level and preserves the characteristics of a typical early medieval feudal district. The village is located on an extensive plateau. This makes it a destination whose special appeal lies less in a single attraction than in the interplay of sacred history, traditional townscapes and historic paths.

Parish Church and Sanctuary

A central cultural landmark is the parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Fresciano. Inside, there is a Robbiana terracotta work by the brothers Santi and Benedetto Buglioni. It depicts Christ handing the keys to Saint Peter. The church also contains a commemorative plaque dated 1603. Both details give the church a clearly tangible historical dimension and make it a specific destination for visitors interested in religious art and local history. In the vicinity of Fresciano, in Fresciano di Sotto, lies the Madonna delle Grazie Sanctuary, whose existence has been documented since 1300. Due to a local tradition, it is also known as Madonna della Neve. According to legend, snow appeared around the chapel on 5 August. The tradition remains explicitly linked to the local name and the legend; it is part of the site's religious narrative. The sanctuary is also associated with a recurring festival: every year on 5 August, Madonna delle Grazie is celebrated in Fresciano di Sotto. Those who wish to plan their stay around a fixed date will find a clearly specified date here within the local festival calendar.

Bridges and Paths with History

The landscape of bridges also tells of different periods. The remains of an ancient Roman bridge near Fresciano once connected the village with Badia Tedalda. At its historic location in Fresciano di Sotto, the Tibetan Bridge on the Via di Francesco in Tuscany was opened in August 2023 and subsequently removed. The site thus combines a reference to an earlier connection with a later structure built at this location, without the two structures belonging to the same period. Another way to explore the area thematically is the La Via del Ponte route. In Rofelle, it leads to the ancient church of Santa Maria, documented since the 12th century. The route also features the ruins of the Mulino del Barucco, a former water-powered grain mill. The mill's historical status is part of its significance: what remains are the ruins of a former operation, not evidence of present-day use. A short detour from the La Via del Ponte route leads to Montebotolino. From there, you can enjoy views of the Valmarecchia and the Alpe della Luna. This detour complements the sacred and technical heritage along the paths with a landscape view.

Local Festival Culture

In addition to the Madonna delle Grazie festival, the Festa della Ranocchiata was held as a sagra in Fresciano in August. It reached its 31st edition.
