The small Tuscan town of Scarperia literally busts into blossom on the last Sunday of May. The flower festival named Infiorata is held here for one day from ten o’clock in the morning till ten o’clock at night.
Streets and squares of the center of the town are covered with flower pictures. Flower beds are made from petals, buds and leaves. Mostly they are carnations. The day before it, town volunteers, students, and traders patiently collect them preparing “colors” for prospective masterpieces.
To create the flower picture, artists make a paper draft prior to the festival. Later, its chalk copy is reproduced on the pavement stones. It is covered with a layer of glue to preserve the picture while the day. After it, the scratch is topped with multicolor petals. Natural shades such as green, white, pink and red hues are used.
All masterpieces are grouped by one common theme chosen preliminarily for the current year. At the same time, the committee shows rich imagination. For the recent years, themes of the flower festival have been very different. They included outstanding people of Italy and Scarperia, different historic periods, cinema, music, sport, literature, travelling, and many others.
Thanks to the flower festival “Infiorata”, the medieval Scarperia turns into an amazing fairy tale with colorful pictures.
Definitely, your eyes will be glued to the ground on this day, but don’t forget that architectural sights of the town tower above the flower pictures. Buildings located on the central square are worth your attention first of all.
Craft traditions of the town are also remarkable. Scarperia has been known for metal items production for a long time. If you are already in Scarperia, take this chance and visit the famous museum of cutting instruments located in the Vicar Palace. While the festival, there are discounts for entry tickets. Cutting instruments production is not only a part of the history of Scarperia. There are a number of shops where you can buy goods produced by modern craftsmen.
