Between the Via Francigena, Val d'Orcia and railway history

Torrenieri combines historic routes, sacred art and an unusually prominent transport history. The Via Francigena runs through the centre and there leads into the Parco della Val d'Orcia. This gives you direct access to a route that not only shapes the town historically, but also makes its connection with the Val d'Orcia landscape visible. On Sigeric's itinerary, Torrenieri is also the XIII station. The Via Cassia is also part of the town's history. Torrenieri lies along its route; in the past, the road and railway formed a transport hub there. This former function must be distinguished from the present situation, but it helps explain why the railway station plays an important role in the townscape and regional transport history.

Art, church and local traditions

The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena houses the painted wooden sculpture “Madonna col Bambino in trono” by Domenico di Niccolò dei Cori. The work is dated to the second or third decade of the 15th century. The church complex also includes the 16th-century Oratorio della Compagnia di San Rocco. Both references point to an older, art-historically shaped side of Torrenieri that clearly differs from a mere transit stop. Another cultural highlight is the Murales di Renzo Regoli. You will find it on the retaining wall next to Torrenieri's stadium, on the side facing Via Pascoli. This image is complemented by the traditional Festa Patronale di Santa Maria Maddalena, which is celebrated in Torrenieri. Thus, alongside the historic buildings and artworks, local festival traditions are also central.

Railway station, historic trains and cycling route

Torrenieri railway station opened on 14 May 1865 as the terminus of the Asciano–Torrenieri railway line. Today, historic Treno Natura trains return to the station on the Asciano–Monte Antico line; this line is closed to regular traffic. This is not a statement about a fixed timetable, but describes the special historic and tourist use of the connection. If you explore Torrenieri by bicycle, the Eroica cycling route is nearby, about 3 km away in the direction of San Quirico. The access route described follows the old course of the Via Cassia via the turn-off to Cosona and the brown Eroica signposts. The approximate distance and the signposts are the key points of orientation. For motorhome travel, there is a large, equipped pitch in the car park at the railway station. The station car park on Via Bindo Crocchi also has a WC waste-disposal point, a drinking-water fountain and a fountain with non-potable water for washing. The illuminated, paved area is also suitable for overnight stays. This infrastructure appeals to a different type of traveller than the historic churches, the Via Francigena or the cycling route, and makes the railway station a clearly defined practical point of reference.
