Monteriggioni between Fortress and the Tuscan Landscape

Monteriggioni is a destination for you if you want to combine medieval history, distinctive architecture, paths through the countryside and regional culinary culture. At its heart is the Castello di Monteriggioni: The Republic of Siena founded the fortress in the second decade of the 13th century to defend the border against the rival city of Florence. This historical purpose continues to shape the character of the town to this day.

A Walled Borgo with Towers and an Old Pieve

The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta is located on the main square of the borgo of Monteriggioni. It was built in the 13th century and has an original façade from that century. Inside, the pieve also preserves a bell dating from 1299. This brings key evidence of the town’s history together directly in its historic centre.

The fortifications of Monteriggioni comprise 14 imposing towers. The walls extend for approximately 570 metres along the hilltop. For your visit, this creates a clear focus on fortress architecture and local history, without restricting you to a single building. The Camminamenti sulle Mura offer views both of the inside and outside of the borgo; their southern side overlooks Chianti.

History to See and Experience

The educational tour “Monteriggioni in arme” presents its content across four rooms, each dedicated to a period in the history of the fortress. On display are faithful reproductions of medieval and Renaissance weapons and armour, as well as models of historical siege weapons and techniques. Visitors can pick up and put on some of the weapons and pieces of armour. If you are travelling with varied interests, this direct exhibition experience complements the tour of the borgo with a vivid historical dimension.

The cultural offerings beyond the fortress walls also reach back into the area’s earlier history. The MaM – Museo Archeologico di Monteriggioni is located in the monumental complex of Abbadia Isola, a former monastery dating from 1001, a few kilometres from Monteriggioni. The museum presents the history of the Monteriggioni area from the Middle Ages back to prehistoric times.

Paths, Nature and a Railway Station in Castellina Scalo

The Monteriggioni area has numerous historical and natural-history routes for outdoor activities. These include hiking and cycling trails as well as the Via Francigena. A cycle path leads from Castellina Scalo to the Colonna di Monteriggioni, a well-known rest stop at the foot of the Castello di Monteriggioni. Castellina Scalo is also an important point of reference for travelling by train: The nearest railway station is located a few kilometres from Monteriggioni on the Empoli–Siena railway line.

The landscape includes the Montagnola Senese. It is classified both as a Site of Community Importance (S.I.C.) and as a Site of Regional Interest (S.I.R.). There you will find coppice forests with holm oak (Quercus ilex), downy oak and maple; chestnut groves grow at higher elevations. Numerous natural caves are also among the features of this area. This means you can base your choice of accommodation not only on the fortress, but also on your interests in the landscape, hiking or cycling, without losing sight of the town’s cultural side.

Wine, Local Products and a Traditional July Event

In Monteriggioni, there are wineries where Chianti Classico DOCG and Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG can be tasted. Typical products of the area also include saffron, cheese, honey and grappa. This regional aspect complements the historical sights with Tuscan culinary culture, which can be included as a focus in its own right when planning your trip.

A special event is the historical festival “Monteriggioni di torri si corona”. It traditionally takes place every year in July and has been held for over 30 years.
