Discover San Rocco in Tuscany
San Rocco between Church History and Wetlands
San Rocco can be discovered through several clearly distinct reasons to visit: its Neo-Renaissance church, the history of an independent district, traditional festivals, and the nature trails of the Padule di Fucecchio.Church, Local History and Festivals
The Chiesa di San Rocco is the central meeting place for religious celebrations and cultural events in the San Rocco district. As a Neo-Renaissance church, it also shapes the historic character of the area. The settlement grew from a population that had been settling around the Church of San Rocco since the 17th century and expanded considerably until the end of the 20th century. The subsequent development established a clear distinction within the surrounding area: after separating from San Silvestro in 1884, on which San Rocco had previously depended, the district developed independently. In 1887, it was recognized as a parish; this distinguished San Rocco from Larciano Alto. Those interested in local history will therefore find not just a single building here, but also the clearly traceable development of a settlement into an independent district. One of the notable memorial sites is Lo stupore. The memorial commemorates the victims of the Eccidio del Padule di Fucecchio on August 23, 1944, and was inaugurated in the presence of Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Lo stupore is step-free and accessible to all citizens. This makes it possible to include this memorial site in exploring the area's history without an additional access step. The festival calendar is also part of the area's character. In San Rocco, the Festa di Primavera includes the traditional Luna Park. Larciano's patronal festival is dedicated to Saint San Rocco and explicitly highlights the connection between the place name and the religious tradition.Area Le Morette and Padule di Fucecchio
The Area Le Morette offers a different focus. It is characterized by extensive reed beds and large open expanses of water and is considered one of the best places for birdwatching in the entire wetland area throughout the year. In Castelmartini, a nature trail to the Area Le Morette begins at Porto delle Morette. The starting point can be reached on foot or by car; the Area Le Morette itself is freely accessible year-round. The main access point to the Padule di Fucecchio nature reserve is also located in Castelmartini, in the municipality of Larciano, on the Provinciale Francesca between Montecatini and Fucecchio. Excursions and guided tours are frequently organized from Castelmartini to explore the nature trails of the Padule di Fucecchio.Hiking and Cycling Trails
If you would like to combine your stay with a longer but flat hike, the CAI 824 trail leads from San Rocco to Bagnolo. The round trip is 12 km long and runs over flat terrain. For cyclists, the San Rocco – San Baronto – Centocampi route is designated for city bikes, touring bikes, road bikes, gravel bikes, and mountain bikes. When traveling from Pistoia, the recommended route leads via San Baronto and Lamporecchio to Larciano S. Rocco.
