The Torre del Fattucchio trail begins in La Peschiera in Pian degli Ontani. Another geological feature is the Buca delle Fate, a small cavity in the sandstone cliffs from which air rises at a constant temperature. In the Piano degli Ontani State Nature Reserve, beech forests, mixed mesophilous forests, ridge meadows, and montane heathlands shape the Apennine mountain landscape. The peaks of Poggione, Pizzo Alpestre, and Monte Uccelliera rise along the upper ridge. There is also a dedicated experience for cyclists: a moderately difficult mountain-bike and gravel route runs through the Biogenetic Forest Reserve of Pian degli Ontani. It begins in the square near Albergo La Villa. There is a spring there for refilling water, and further springs can be found along the route. The route therefore complements the hike to Torre del Fattucchio with a sporting way to cross the forest.

Beatrice, local history, and nature education

The “Beatrice” park and cultural trail in Pian degli Ontani runs from the memorial plaque dedicated to Beatrice in Piazza Acerone, via the cultural park on Viale Beatrice, to La Frassa. Its focus is Beatrice Bugelli, also known as Beatrice di Pian degli Ontani. The illiterate shepherdess and poet, who lived in the 19th century, gained fame and recognition in Val Sestaione through her improvised songs in ottava rima. The cultural trail makes this person and her connection to the area visible along a dedicated route. Another way to engage with the landscape is offered by the “Fior di Pietra” visitor centre at the Biogenetic Reserve. It has an educational room, organises environmental education activities and nature-film screenings, and presents themed exhibitions, both temporary and permanent. The centre thus complements the outdoor trails with an explicitly natural-history and educational perspective. The local history also includes the Church of Santi Maria e Cirillo in Pian degli Ontani, which became a parish church in 1785. In earlier times, the area was probably a summer stage in the transhumance of shepherds. This historical classification does not explain any present-day activity, but it points to the older use of the mountain landscape.

Necci and further discoveries

The Sagra del Neccio is a local festival celebrating necci, a typical mountain dish. It usually takes place towards the end of August.
