Montevettolini: Castle, Churches and Trails on Montalbano

Montevettolini lies on a ridge on the northwestern slopes of Montalbano, 187 metres above sea level. The history of the village can be seen in its preserved buildings and the surviving traces of different periods.

Castle and historical traces

The castle of Montevettolini was founded around the 12th century. The historic appearance also includes the Tor dei Barbacci, formerly known as Porta del Vicino and Porta del Malvicino. It is the only historic gate of Montevettolini that has been fully preserved. The different names belong to the surviving history of the building and should not be confused with different gates. The church of Santi Michele Arcangelo e Lorenzo Martire is a religious building of ancient origin and probably dates back to the 13th century. The present appearance of the village church is the result of a renovation led by Vittorio Anastagi from 1733 onwards. East of Montevettolini, the Oratorio della Madonna della Neve stands at a fork in the road. It preserves a fresco of the Madonna and Child with saints, attributed to a 15th-century master who was close to Gentile da Fabriano. Another historical trace leads to the Villa Medicea di Montevettolini. It was built after 1597 on the orders of Ferdinando I de’ Medici. The history of the village therefore extends beyond the medieval foundation of the castle into the Medici era.

From the hill of Montevettolini, CAI-marked trekking trails follow the connections between the castles of Valdinievole and Montalbano. Around the village, these trails pass through lush Mediterranean vegetation and offer views across the valley and towards the Apennines. This makes the landscape not merely a backdrop for the historic buildings, but an independent part of travel planning. A CAI hike through Montevettolini includes a visit to the church of Santi Michele e Lorenzo and a walk through the village’s characteristic lanes. This documented hike thus combines two different sides of Montevettolini: the religious building and the historic structure of its lanes. Processions and festivals

The local customs also give the village a special cultural rhythm. The Processione del Gesù Morto takes place on Good Friday every three years. Since the 16th century, it has retraced the Stations of the Passion of Christ and the ascent to Calvary. In August, the Festa della Madonna della Neve is celebrated at the Oratorio della Madonna della Neve. Another tradition is the costumed Processione del Ringraziamento, which takes place in Montevettolini on the Tuesday after Easter.
