Buriano between culture and Montalbano

Buriano combines a distinctive village church with paths through the hills of Montalbano, historical traces and insights into regional agriculture. If you would like to combine culture, landscapes and local products during your trip, you will find very different points of interest here: a religious complex with a distinctive history, several routes and springs, as well as Baugiano, an educational and social farm.

Church, Stations of the Cross and historical traces

The Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Buriano was rebuilt in 1735. Along the road around the church, which is also called the Complesso Monumentale di Buriano, there is a Stations of the Cross with 14 images and an olive-wood cross from Jerusalem. This means that a visit need not be limited to the church building itself; the surrounding area is also part of the town’s identified cultural attractions. Another historical trace leads to Rocca Maestrino. Its form and masonry point to a military origin dating back a long time. Pollaiolo also had buildings powered by water, which are recorded as mills in cadastral maps from the beginning of the 19th century. This classification remains tied to the historical record preserved in the maps and adds insight into earlier uses to the area’s cultural character.

Circular routes and olive groves

Several clearly distinct walking experiences are available for active days. The Anello del Sasso Regino circular route starts near the village of Buriano and reaches the rock formation known as Sasso Regino. The route therefore connects a starting point near the village with an expressly named landscape destination. The Itinerario del Montalbano runs mainly along unpaved paths. This characteristic is more important when planning your day than a general description as a hiking route, because it describes the nature of the surface. The Lucciano-Montorio-Buriano panoramic route passes through small villages and the olive groves of the Montalbano hills. It therefore focuses on villages and agriculturally shaped slopes, while the Anello del Sasso Regino is defined by its named rock formation. Springs are also specific points of reference. The Fonte di San Busceto is located on the Montalbano mountain range at an elevation of 335 metres and provides fresh water throughout the year. The Fonte della Bettina can be reached via a short staircase and has a picnic table. The two descriptions clearly distinguish the springs: at San Busceto, the location, elevation and year-round water supply are the focus, while at the Fonte della Bettina, the access and available resting place are key.

Baugiano: farm products and visit formats

Baugiano is an educational farm and a social farm. Oil, cheese and cured meats are produced and sold directly there. Baugiano also has five themed areas, an amphitheatre and a picnic area. The farm thus complements the cultural, historical and scenic attractions with a place where agricultural production, sales and various themed areas come together. On Saturdays and Sundays, visits to the farm animals during their care were offered at Baugiano from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. by prior reservation.
