A Village with Many Traces of Everyday Life in Earlier Times

Until the 1970s, sharecropping families lived in the historic village of Terriccio. The village had a church, a school, a bakery, a brick kiln, mills and a carpenter’s workshop. Terriccio was not merely a place of residence, but had the facilities and crafts that shaped the everyday life of its community. Castello del Terriccio was once home to more than 500 people.

The church in the historic village is also a place of regular religious life: Mass is celebrated there every Sunday. For your visit, this aspect complements the historic evidence with a continuing tradition, without reducing Terriccio solely to its past.

Castello del Terriccio: Castle Remains, Cellars and Views of the Islands

The estate of Castello del Terriccio is home to the remains of the medieval Castello di Doglia, located in the most panoramic part of the property. The site thus brings history and landscape together in a tangible setting. On clear days, four islands of the Tuscan Archipelago can be seen from the estate. At sunset, the sun disappears over the Tyrrhenian Sea – a landscape moment that opens up views from the rural surroundings to the coast and islands.

Wine is also among the documented visitor experiences in Terriccio. During a visit to the Castello del Terriccio winery, visitors are taken into the cellar, where they learn about the winemaking techniques used there. The focus is therefore not only on the finished product, but also on the place where its production can be understood.

Regional Cuisine in Historic Spaces

The Terraforte restaurant is located in a restored historic carpenter’s workshop in the fortified village of Castello del Terriccio. The combination of historic fabric and contemporary design defines the setting. Here, you can therefore experience a culinary venue whose spatial history is directly connected to the former world of crafts in the fortified village.

The 2025 edition of the annual culinary event “Cucina Povera” included a dinner by reservation only on the panoramic terrace of the Terraforte restaurant. The dishes prepared by Chef Tomei highlighted the region’s culinary ties. In 2025, “Cucina Povera” reached its 34th edition; the opening included an evening at Castello del Terriccio featuring a discussion with experts on the region’s culinary quality.

The return of “La Cucina della Tradizione” to Castello del Terriccio was also announced for 18 July 2026. Local flavors and biodiversity were planned as themes. This dated announcement forms part of the site’s more recent event history and shows how historic spaces in Terriccio are connected with regional cuisine and questions concerning the diversity of the landscape.
