Montemagno among Olive Groves and Far-Reaching Views

Montemagno lies among the olive groves of Monte Pisano and stretches along the Zambra di Montemagno stream. From the higher areas, views extend along the Arno as far as the sea and across the plain to Pisa. The stream, the slopes and the agricultural surroundings give the place a distinctly scenic character.

Landscape and Nature around Montemagno

The Parco della Ricordanza covers approximately half a hectare of terraced land. Dry-stone walls and exposed rocks shape the grounds; numerous typical Mediterranean maquis species also grow there. The terraces make the historic design of the site visible and distinguish the park from the open olive groves in its surroundings.

The Museo di Storia Naturale dell'Università di Pisa is prepared to offer themed activities and visits in the Parco della Ricordanza. The park is therefore not only one of Montemagno's scenic landmarks, but can also be explored through natural history programs.

Trails to the Rocca della Verruca

The Rocca della Verruca in Montemagno can be reached by trails from both Vicopisano and Calci. Its summit is a popular destination for hikers, walkers and mountain bikers. A document dated July 21, 996 provides evidence of the fortress; it therefore already existed before the year 1000.

A natural history route passes through the Certosa di Calci and Montemagno. This route also allows visitors to explore the underground areas of the Rocca della Verruca. Another hiking trail leads downhill from an old Augustinian convent to the old village of Rezzano and from there uphill to Montemagno. The trails thus provide access both to the fortress at higher elevation and to historic sites in the surrounding area.

From Pisa, you can reach Calci by buses 120 and 161 in approximately 30 minutes. The bus connection complements the trails leading from Calci and Vicopisano to the Rocca della Verruca.

Monastery, Millstones and Churches

The Nicosia Monastery remains regularly closed to the public. However, exceptional openings take place throughout the year. Near the monastery, there are still places where millstones for mills and oil presses were extracted from the rock.

Montemagno is also home to the Chiesa di Santa Maria ad Nives. The single-nave body of the church ends in a triumphal arch. The Chiesa di San Martino is the oldest church in the village. It houses the relics of Saint Coronato, who is considered the patron saint of Montemagno.

In this way, Montemagno's various historic sites can be connected with the scenic landmarks along the Zambra di Montemagno, in the Parco della Ricordanza and on Monte Pisano, without combining the individual buildings and trails into a single unified ensemble.
