Latignano reveals its history on different levels: the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo is documented as far back as 1217, religious artworks can be found in the cemetery, and traces of Roman centuriation are still visible today. There are also festivals featuring a procession, floats, a blessing and dishes from the local tradition. If you are looking for accommodation for your trip to Tuscany, these specific themes can help you understand the character of the place.

Churches and Art in Latignano

The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo offers a point of interest in art history: its high altar is made of polychrome marble and was previously in the Pieve di Vicopisano. Polychrome means multicoloured; in the case of the altar, this identifies both a distinctive material and its former location. The parish church of Latignano was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century. The altar and the rebuilding represent different aspects of the church’s history: the origin of a furnishing in one case, and a date marking a period of construction in the other.

Latignano cemetery also has its own art-historical connections. The chapel houses a 19th-century statue depicting the Madonna delle Anime Sante del Purgatorio. A marble plaque in the cemetery once held an image of the Madonna del Soccorso from the 14th century. These are different subjects and forms: a statue in the chapel and an image that was once displayed on the marble plaque.

The cemetery has seasonal opening hours. From 1 October to 30 April, it is open from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm; from 1 May to 30 September, it is open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. Check the hours again shortly before your visit so you can plan your time within the relevant opening period.

Roman Traces in the Landscape

Traces of Roman centuriation are still visible in Latignano today. The term refers to the Roman surveying and division of land into regular plots. This offers a different historical perspective from church architecture and devotional art: alongside individual buildings and works of art, it brings the layout of the landscape into focus. If you are interested in the history of a place, these traces add another scale to the visible historical markers found in the churches.

Festival Traditions and Regional Dishes

The Festa e Palio del Carretto takes place at the Spazio Feste festival grounds on Via Ciro Menotti in Latignano. On the eve of the festival, participants parade through the streets to Piazza della Chiesa. After the church service, the floats and participants are blessed there. The programme brings together the procession, the church service and the blessing that follows. Traditional Festa e Palio del Carretto dishes also include those based on duck and tripe; the selection of dishes may vary.

The fourth edition of the Festa del maiale e della birra was held in Latignano over two weekends in July: from 10 to 12 and from 17 to 19 July. The event took place at Spazio Feste on Via Ciro Menotti. The food stand served draft beer, pork knuckle, porchetta and grilled specialities from 7:30 pm. These details refer to that particular edition; offerings may differ at later festivals.

When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up your interests: are church art and traces of the historic landscape your priority, or festival traditions and regional dishes? Latignano’s attractions range from the marble altar and devotional images to traces of centuriation and local festivals. If a particular festival is important to your trip, check the latest dates and event details in advance.
