Canneto Between Castle History and Hillside Landscapes

Canneto lies on a hill at the edge of the Val di Cecina and is surrounded by forests and hills that separate the Sterza Valley from the Cornia Valley. This creates a destination where exploring a clearly defined historic center can be combined with landscape experiences and walks. Canneto originated as a castle around the year 1000 and still preserves numerous residential towers today.

Historic Center with Distinctive Buildings

The historic center has an elliptical layout. Two parallel streets cross the center; they correspond to Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Umberto I. From the west, you can enter the center through Porta alla Buca, and from the south through Porta agli Archi. Near Porta alla Buca, medieval architectural elements are visible along some sections of the walls. The residential towers also include one with a circular ground plan. A large defensive tower rises above the bell tower. Another historic landmark is the Pieve di San Lorenzo. It is a Romanesque church that was probably built in the 11th or 12th century and was already known in 1521. Canneto is also home to a cousin of Giosuè Carducci, where the poet was a guest. Together, these places do not form a single museum destination, but rather a series of architectural elements and stories that reveal themselves as you walk through the lanes.

Viewpoints and a Walk along Via della Fonte

There are numerous viewpoints in the lanes of Canneto. A route around the outside of the inhabited center runs entirely along Via della Fonte. As you walk there, you get views of Canneto’s inhabited center. This makes it possible to understand the shape of the town not only through its two inner streets: Via della Fonte also offers an outside perspective on the settlement and makes the connection between the hill, walls, towers, and houses visible.

Abbey, Routes, and Regional Events

Canneto’s history is connected with the nearby Abbey of San Pietro. For active days, the area around Monteverdi Marittimo offers a total of approximately 400 kilometers of cycling and trekking routes. These also pass through the Monterufoli e Caselli Nature Reserve. The approximate figure of 400 kilometers describes the area’s network of routes; it should not be equated with the length of a single route or walk in Canneto. Regional culinary culture is also part of the events calendar. The summer program of Monteverdi Marittimo and Canneto includes traditional gastronomic events. Canneto is scheduled to host its 44th Tortello Festival in early August. In this way, a seasonal culinary event complements the town’s permanently visible history without reducing Canneto solely to its buildings.
