Churches, Villas, and Routes in Valdottavo

The Complesso Bandistico di Valdottavo was founded in 1881. The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo Apostoli dates from the late 11th and early 12th centuries. Valdottavo is home to several Liberty-style villas.

Churches, Villas, and the History of the Town

One of the most striking religious buildings is the Chiesetta di San Nicolao in the center of Valdottavo. It was consecrated on December 6, 1760, and is commonly known as the Chiesetta di “Ciopi.” This nickname comes from the name of the villa’s last owner, to which the religious building belonged. It is precisely this combination of architecture, local history, and a name handed down through tradition that makes the small church a tangible detail for a tour of Valdottavo.

The Chiesa di San Pietro di Valdottavo is an example of the application of urban construction techniques in a rural setting. The Oratorio di San Rocco is also among the religious monuments worth visiting. Several Liberty-style villas complement this historic setting. Around the 1920s, the villas and the Teatro Colombo were built by emigrants who had become wealthy abroad.

The local musical tradition is also part of the town’s identity. The Complesso Bandistico di Valdottavo gave its first official performance on the eve of Epiphany in 1881 at the Teatro Vecchio di Valdottavo. Today, it takes part in local, civic, and religious events. The history of the ensemble can therefore be understood not only through its year of foundation, but also through its role on different occasions.

Hiking on the Via Matildica and to Monte dell’Elto

If you would like to combine culture with physical activity, Valdottavo offers two different landscape experiences. The Via Matildica del Volto Santo climbs from Valdottavo’s first houses to San Donato and its small church. The route thus leads from the built-up area of the town into a higher-altitude setting and connects Valdottavo with another destination shaped by its religious heritage.

A second walk begins in Domazzano di Valdottavo. From there, a scenic route with a gentle incline takes about 20 minutes to reach the fortifications of Monte dell’Elto, also known as Rivangaio. The approximate duration and gentle incline clearly distinguish this route from the uphill Via Matildica. For planning your day, you can therefore choose between a route to San Donato and a shorter walk to the fortifications, without equating the two experiences.
