Trassilico – Rocca, Churches and Mountain Views

Trassilico combines a striking fortress, religious heritage and paths with expansive views across the mountains. The village lies at an altitude of 720 metres on the Garfagnana side of the Apuan Alps, opposite Monte Forato and Pania della Croce. This makes it a destination where local history and landscape cannot be considered separately.

Rocca and Village Character

The Rocca di Trassilico occupies the highest part of the village. Its walls and tower have been restored, while narrow streets in the village lead towards the fortification. Trassilico became the seat of the eponymous vicariate in 1430; religious buildings, manor houses and elegant portals reflect the importance of the village during Este rule. Those who explore the historic centre carefully will therefore find not just a single viewpoint, but an architectural ensemble in which different functions and eras become visible. The religious heritage includes the Church of San Pietro, which dates back to 1100. Another special feature is the organ of the Church of SS. Pietro e Paolo. It is a work from the first half of the 18th century and is housed in a chest made of chestnut wood. Carvings frame the pipes and make the case itself a remarkable part of the instrument. Visiting the churches therefore complements the view of the Rocca with smaller, detail-rich insights into the local history.

Paths and Mountain Views

The Rocca di Trassilico can be reached from Gallicano via the “Zappello” path, which is considered the fastest route. The “Chieva” path offers views of Pania della Croce and Monte Forato. From the Rocca, there are also views towards the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Apuan Alps. The “Le Capre” path is suitable for mountain biking. Trassilico therefore appeals not only to visitors interested in culture, but also to travellers who wish to combine their stay with a documented outdoor activity. The mountain setting remains the common backdrop to the fortress, viewpoints and paths.

Fontanino and Metati

At the entrance to the village stands the Fontanino di Trassilico, a small building for public use. The entire building was restored in 2004 through an initiative of the Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane in cooperation with the municipality of Gallicano. The Fontanino complements the larger attractions with a smaller building rooted in the local setting. The chestnut economy has also left its architectural mark in the surrounding area. In chestnut forests there are small structures known as metati, which are used to dry chestnuts. A typical metato consists of local stone, two half-levels and a front loggia. In a metato, chestnuts are dried over a fire; they are placed on a grate made of chestnut branches.
