Ripafratta – Rocca, River Paths and Regional Connections

Ripafratta combines a medieval connection to the village with paths, rivers, and regional transport links. The Rocca and church as cultural points of reference

Above Ripafratta, the Rocca di Ripafratta rises on Colle Vergario; it is also called Rocca di San Paolino. It is a medieval military fortress. This makes the historic site above the village a particularly clear marker of Ripafratta’s past. The Festa della Rocca takes up this connection every year: the festival has been held in Ripafratta since 2002 and currently takes place on the second weekend of September. The program includes guided tours of the Rocca and through the village, walks, trekking, rafting on the river, archery, bicycle excursions, yoga in the forest, and horseback riding. In the village, the Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo complements this cultural focus. It was built between 1854 and 1857 in place of an older Romanesque parish church that had been seriously damaged by the 1846 earthquake. The church contains a wooden statue of the Madonna di Rupecava, attributed to Andrea Pisano and dated to 1340.

Paths for walks, cycling, and excursions

The shorter CAI-RET Trail 105 also begins in Ripafratta. Another connection is the Puccini cycle and walking path. It runs through Ripafratta and from there leads, on the one hand, to Lago di Massaciuccoli and Torre Del Lago Puccini (LU). On the other hand, after a short section on the ordinary road in the town center, it follows the banks of the Serchio to Pontasserchio (PI). This route connects different landscapes and places without requiring you to commit to a single excursion destination. The waterways around Ripafratta also shape the area. The Steccaia is an old artificial barrier in the Serchio near Ripafratta, below the bridge connecting Ripafratta with the village of Filettole. The Fosso del Mulino begins in Ripafratta and runs beneath the village. In addition, the Ozzeri Canal runs between the Serchio and Ripafratta and flows into the Serchio downstream from the village.

Getting there and further orientation

Concrete regional connections are available for travel by public transport. Ripafratta railway station is served by Trenitalia regional trains on the Pisa–Lucca–Aulla line. Ripafratta is also connected to Pisa by bus on urban route 60 and to Lucca by bus on urban route 67.
