Massaciuccoli – Roman Baths and Wetland

Massaciuccoli opens up an appealing combination of cultural history, wetland landscapes and active exploration in Tuscany. Roman Villa and Panorama over the Plain

In Massaciuccoli Romana, the thermal complex includes an otium villa that belonged to the Pisan family of the Venulei. The term refers to a Roman villa used for stays and relaxation; at the site, however, the focus is not on a fully preserved building. Only the ancient baths of the Roman Villa have survived in visible form. From the piazza near the sign “Massaciuccoli Romana”, a path leads to the Roman Villa and to the church of Massaciuccoli above it. This section combines the historical traces with a sweeping view: the panorama extends over the lake and the surrounding plain to the sea, and in clear weather even as far as the Torre di Pisa. The site therefore offers two clearly distinct highlights for your visit – the visible remains of the ancient baths and the view from the higher church.

Wetland, Nature Trail and Museum

The wider wetland area Lago e Palude di Massaciuccoli is designated as an internationally important Ramsar wetland with site number 2311. The designation classifies this landscape area and complements Massaciuccoli’s cultural focus with an officially designated natural area. For immediate orientation in the area, Il Percorso Natura offers a wooden boardwalk and observation points that are accessible to people with disabilities. Another distinct way to explore the subject is the Museo sull’Ecologia della Palude. It consists of three rooms and does not display stuffed animals, but rather lifelike models in life-size and enlarged representations. By Bicycle to Lago di Massaciuccoli

The Giacomo Puccini Cycle Path runs through the area reclaimed from the Massaciuccoli wetlands and then continues to Lago di Massaciuccoli. The route thus reveals another stage in the area’s development: alongside its Roman past and designated wetland, the history of land reclamation is also one of the spatial references through which you can experience Massaciuccoli by bicycle. This provides a clearly defined route for a more active part of your day, without having to separate the cultural and landscape themes from one another.

Opening Hours and Guided Tours

The Riserva naturale del Chiarone (Oasi Massaciuccoli) has designated daily opening hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are also guided tours for groups or school classes that require reservations.
