Magliano combines a distinctive mountain setting with clearly defined hiking connections and a multifaceted local history. The village lies at the foot of Monte Tea and between the sources of the Aulella and Serchio di Soraggio rivers. This makes it a destination that can be explored not only through its landscape, but also through paths, religious buildings, places of remembrance, and traces of history. The municipality of Sillano Giuncugnano extends between the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Tosco-Emiliano and the Parco dell’Orecchiella and invites visitors to hike and trek in nature.

Hiking routes with different starting points

PasseggianMangiando offers a particularly vivid way to explore Magliano. The event reached its fifth edition in 2025. That year’s route was an approximately 17-kilometre circular trail starting and ending in Magliano and passing by the former Mulino di Magliano. In 2026, PasseggianMangiando reached its sixth edition. That year’s hike was an approximately 13-kilometre circular trail starting and ending at the Colonia di Magliano and passing, among other places, the Oratorio della Madonna di Loreto. There were six refreshment stations along the route. The two annual routes therefore provide specific and distinct route references: in 2025, the loop started and ended in the village, while in 2026, the starting point was at the Colonia di Magliano. Other routes also name Magliano as a destination or waypoint. On the Monte Tondo route, the path passes by the Mulino di Magliano; the former mill was recently converted into a residential house. On the Argegna e Tea route, a descent to the left leads to Magliano in about ten minutes.

Villagescape between narrow lanes and a former fortress

A route description from Fivizzano to Castelnuovo in Garfagnana characterizes Magliano as a mountain hamlet with narrow paved lanes, closely packed houses, and sandstone portals. This description in particular draws attention to the village’s architectural details. In the upper part of Magliano, there was a fortress in the Middle Ages. Magliano is first documented in a testament dating from 793.

Sant’Andrea and the religious history

The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo is dated to the 12th century and has historical and religious significance as a place of worship. Inside, it preserves a wooden altarpiece from the 14th century as well as several relics of saints. The 1739 vault painting is by Giuseppe Morelli from Gragnola and depicts the martyrdom of Saint Andrew. The parish church of Sant’Andrea in Magliano was reopened for services after being damaged by the earthquake of 21 June 2013. Thus, in addition to the building’s considerable age, its more recent history is also part of the visitor experience. The cultural tour is complemented by the Monumento ai Caduti di Magliano, which commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars as well as the civilian victims of the Second World War.
