Gragnanella between village history and Lago di Pontecosi

Gragnanella is a destination for travelers who want to combine historic village structures, religious art, and a waterside landscape. The village is located in the Apuan Alps in the Garfagnana and belongs to the municipality of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Village History and the Church of Gragnanella

The old village of Gragnanella lies on a hill. Its structure is reminiscent of a small fortress: numerous entrances are bordered by arches and portals. Gragnanella once had a castle, which has since been destroyed. The memory of this past is part of the village’s historic character, although no preserved structure of the castle itself remains.

At the center stands the parish church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. Inside is a wooden crucifix from the 17th century. The crucifix is made of wild willow wood and was created during the Baroque period. For these celebrations, the crucifix kept in San Bartolomeo is moved and placed on a throne. The procession of the large crucifix dates back to a decision made by the local community in 1985. On that occasion, the crucifix was carried through the village in gratitude for surviving the dangers of the Second World War.

Another local feature is the traditional event “Pizza in Piazza.” It is organized by the local Circolo Anspi to collect donations for Telethon. The name refers to a convivial gathering in a public space, while the documented purpose of the event remains central. Lago di Pontecosi and Hiking

Lago di Pontecosi is located in the area around Gragnanella. One guided hike ran from the historic center of Castelnuovo via Buggina and the Sentiero dell’Ariosto through Antisciana to Gragnanella. On this hike, the route continued from Gragnanella along an old mule track to Pontecosi. The circular route was approximately 10 km long, was described as easy, and was considered suitable for everyone.
