Contignano: Castle, Orcia Landscape and Local Traditions

Contignano combines an ancient settlement structure with the characteristic landscape of the Orcia area and an events calendar in which history, crafts and regional traditions come to life. If you would like to combine culture, landscape and seasonal experiences on your trip to Tuscany, the town offers several clearly distinct points of interest.

Between the Castle and the Borgo

The ancient settlement of Contignano consists of a castle and a borgo located outside the walls. The historic centre includes the privately owned Cassero del Castello di Contignano. It opens to the public on special occasions and during cultural days. For your visit, the specific occasion is therefore decisive: the Cassero is not a site with generally designated daily public access, but is opened on specific occasions. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta is also part of Contignano’s history. For a long time, it was under the patronage of the abbot of San Salvatore. In addition, the town had pilgrim hospices for the accommodation and support of pilgrims.

The Orcia Riverbank and Sienese Clay Hills

Contignano lies on the left bank of the Orcia River at an altitude of 480 metres above sea level. The surrounding area includes pastures, vineyards and gardens; clay hills characterised by cypresses rise all around. The approach road to Contignano already runs alongside the typical Sienese clay badlands. This setting creates a different emphasis from a stay in a Tuscan art city. Instead of a dense urban cultural offering, the town focuses on historic structures, open spaces and the forms of the Sienese hilly landscape. Vineyards, gardens and pastures are not a generic Tuscan backdrop here, but concrete features of Contignano’s surroundings.

Festivals with a Local Character

The Festa Medievale is one of the town’s special cultural occasions. At sunset, a traditional medieval dinner with musicians takes place in Piazza del Castello. The setting thus combines the historic centre of the settlement with an event that explicitly refers to medieval traditions. The Pro Loco di Contignano also organises several events in spring. The Festa di Primavera takes place in April. At the 2026 Festa di Primavera, the programme included a market with typical products, plants, flowers, as well as equipment for gardeners and amateur gardeners. In May, the Pro Loco di Contignano also organises the traditional Passeggiata di Primavera. Finally, the Sagra del raviolo celebrates the culinary heritage of the women of Contignano as a seasonal tradition.

Information for Cyclists
