Chiatri between Puccini, Panoramas and Hiking Trails

Chiatri is an appealing destination for your trip to Tuscany if you would like to combine historical culture, expansive landscapes, hiking, cycling and regional cuisine. The village is considered a panoramic balcony overlooking the municipality of Lucca. At the same time, Chiatri is closely linked to the history of Giacomo Puccini and to several routes with different themes.

Puccini and the historic character of Chiatri

In December 1898, Giacomo Puccini acquired the former Samminiati villa in Chiatri and had it completely renovated. This historical connection is explicitly reflected in the routes around the village. The fourth stage of the Puccini Ride leads uphill from Farneta to Chiatri Puccini. From Chiatri, the Puccini Ride first continues to Monte Quiesa and then to Lake Massaciuccoli, an area with protected landscapes. Chiatri therefore stands not only for a single cultural attraction, but also for a stage within a longer cycling route.

Trails through the landscape and wine region

Those who want to explore Chiatri on foot will find a route with a clear historical and culinary focus in Le Vie del Tordello. It follows a mule track that ends in front of Giacomo Puccini’s former home in Chiatri and runs along the wine and olive oil route. As part of this route, the historic “Da Mariano” restaurant offers a tasting of characteristic Tordelli. The trail thus combines landscape, memories of Puccini and a specific example of regional food culture without turning the individual stops into a single uniform experience. Another hiking connection is the Maggiano / Chiatri trail. It leads from Maggiano to Monti di Chiatri, is 2.600 km long, has an elevation gain of 320 metres and is rated difficulty level E. It therefore differs from the themed routes centred on Puccini and Tordelli. When planning your trip, you can consequently distinguish between a historical route, a culinary-themed trail and an independently designated hiking route.

A place between culture, activity and panoramic views

When planning a trip, Chiatri is particularly suitable as a clear contrast to Tuscany’s major art cities: the focus here is not on a dense museum programme or a succession of numerous sights, but on the historical connection to Puccini, views over the municipality of Lucca, and trails through vineyards and olive groves. If your travel group has different interests, these focal points can be considered separately: cultural history at the former villa, activity on the Puccini Ride or the Maggiano / Chiatri trail, and regional cuisine as part of Le Vie del Tordello.
