Discover Benabbio: Castle Ruins, Museum and Churches
Accommodation in Benabbio
Benabbio is a rewarding destination if you want to discover Tuscany not only through its landscapes but also through its visibly developed history. Castle ruins, churches, a museum spread across several buildings and a route that passes ten oratories and churches come together to create a varied cultural programme. On the way to Benabbio, the road passes through acacia forests and by numerous olive groves.
Castle Ruins and Medieval History
Northeast of Benabbio, Castello Lupari stands as a ruin on a hill, with sections of its walls still standing. The complex reached its greatest extent in the 13th century. At that time, Castello Lupari became an important administrative centre that controlled the entire Val di Lima. The ruin therefore represents not just a single historic building, but also points to the former political importance of the village and its surroundings. The Chiesa di S. Michele is also directly connected to this historical context: it is located within the walls of the old castle of Benabbio and was built in 1218. Another highlight is the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1338. The Chiesa di Santa Maria in Benabbio also houses a wooden Annunciation group from the 14th century. It was created by Piero d’Angelo di Guarnerio, the father of Jacopo della Quercia. The MABe and the Via degli Oratori
The Museo di Arte Sacra di Benabbio, or MABe for short, makes the village’s religious art and cultural history visible at several locations. Its collection developed from artistic and cultural treasures accumulated over centuries by the parish of Santa Maria Assunta in Benabbio, as well as by other religious institutions connected with it in the surrounding area. The collection is spread across three main locations. The museum’s headquarters are in the Oratorio della Santissima Trinità . The other locations are the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta and the Oratorio del Santissimo Sacramento. This arrangement is important for your visit because the MABe is not designed as a single exhibition in just one building. The museum can currently be visited by telephone appointment in advance at 3468298282. The Via degli Oratori provides a natural connecting theme for a visit. The route passes ten oratories and churches that mark its stages. This allows you to discover the individual religious buildings not only in isolation, but also as a sequence of stops. The combination of Castello Lupari, the churches and the MABe draws attention to different periods and forms of the local cultural heritage.Getting There and Finding Your Way Around
