Nisporto between the Cove, Beach and Valley

Nisporto lies west of Rio nell'Elba in a narrow, horseshoe-shaped cove at the end of a small valley that descends from Monte Capannello to the sea. The beach faces north. Punta di Nisporto protects it to the west, while Poggio La Guardia protects it to the east. The valley therefore ends directly at the cove, while the two points mentioned define its western and eastern sides.

Beach and Amenities by the Sea

Nisporto Beach is suitable for swimming and activities focused on exploring the sea. Pedal boats and small boats can be rented on the shore. Bars and restaurants are also part of the beach area and complement a stay by the water. There are several parking areas along the road to the beach, making orientation easier during a day visit, without this implying any further statements about the location of individual accommodations.

Hiking near Nisportino

Those who would like to combine a visit to the coastal resort with a hike will find several documented options. The circular trail near Nisportino begins and ends at Nisportino Beach and can be reached from Nisporto via a paved road. In addition, hiking trail 201 leads to Nisporto Beach. The two routes therefore differ in their relationship to the beach: the circular trail returns to its starting point, while hiking trail 201 has Nisporto as its destination. Along the nearby cliffs that drop steeply to the sea on the Nisportino route, kestrels and peregrine falcons breed. For planning your day, this means combining beach access, the course of the trail and a distinctive coastal landscape.

The Fornace della Ballerina on the Beach

On the left side of Nisporto Beach are the remains of an old kiln made of stone and red bricks. It is called “della Ballerina.” The Fornace della Ballerina has been classified by the Soprintendenza as a structure of historical and artistic interest. Lime and bricks were produced in the kiln and subsequently transported to Portoferraio by rowing boats. Its former use therefore consisted of two successive stages: producing the materials on site and transporting them onward by sea. As a result, the beach has a clearly recognizable connection not only to its present-day use but also to earlier production and transport by sea.

Local History and an Annual Tradition

The place name also has a documented historical trace: in Giovanni Antonio Magini's cartography from 1598, Nisporto is recorded as “Disporto Grande.” This date places the cartographic reference in the late 16th century. Another tradition associated with the place is the annual reenactment of the love story of the “Prince” and the ballerina of Nisporto. It takes place on the beach on August 10. The date is therefore one of the town's distinctive cultural associations, while the Fornace della Ballerina makes its material history visible along the shore.
