Bagnaia: Bay, Beach and Historic Trails

Bagnaia combines a sheltered bay, maritime history and trails leading to special cultural sites. The village is located on the bay of the same name, which is sheltered to the south by Punta Pina and to the north by Punta degli Scarpellini. The Fosso di Bagnaia runs through the village after flowing down from Monte Volterraio. At Baia di Bagnaia, a beach approximately 300 metres long stretches along the shore, with sand and pebbles; the seabed consists of fine gravel. Here, coastal scenery, water and traces of history come together in one place.

Coast, trails and landscape

If you would like to combine your stay with physical activity, the network of walking and cycling trails offers the shorter north–south route between Bagnaia and Porto Azzurro. Bagnaia is also a starting point for snorkelling in Elba’s underwater world. Monte Capannello offers a sweeping view: from its summit, the 360-degree panorama extends across the Bagnaia valley towards Fortezza del Volterraio. A botanical addition is the nearby L’Orto dei Semplici. The garden covers an area of approximately one hectare near the Eremo di Santa Caterina and was established in 1997 as a place of study for the plant diversity of Elba and the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. The information panels explain the plants collected, their characteristics and their traditional medicinal and culinary uses. This makes it possible to explore the visit not only through the landscape, but also through the uses and history of the plants.

Fortress and Eremo di Santa Caterina

The nearby Fortezza del Volterraio was restored by the park authority and can now be visited again. It stands at 395 metres above sea level in a rocky location with panoramic views. The visit follows a clearly defined format: guided tours include trekking and admission to the fortress, and advance booking is required. If you plan this excursion, the reservation is therefore part of the visit arrangements. The nearby Eremo di Santa Caterina also encompasses several historical periods. It probably dates back to the Romanesque period and was extended and remodelled in 1634. At the same time, it was built on the remains of a hilltop fortress erected by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC. Traditionally, a festival is held at the Eremo every year on the Monday after Easter. Guided excursions along the trails in the surrounding area also depart from the CEA “Franco Franchini”.

Maritime and architectural history

Bagnaia also has a history closely linked to the port, shipbuilding and government planning. Between 1742 and 1746, Grand Duke Francesco II of Lorraine had salt pans built in Bagnaia. In 1752, he also had a port built there for stationing the grand-ducal fleet. A more recent maritime trace is the Cantiere Elba shipyard, founded by Giuseppe Cacciò in 1946. Among other vessels, the wooden ships Elba Ia and Bagnaia were built there. Another, significantly more recent historical layer is the Complesso Residenziale Sant'Anna residential complex in Bagnaia. It was built between 1974 and 1991 to designs by the influential architects Roberto Gabetti and Aimaro Isola.
