Rignano Sull'arno: Paths, Churches and Tuscan Landscapes

Rignano sull'Arno lies in the Valdarno between the river and the hills. The area combines districts scattered throughout the countryside, cultivated fields, vineyards and olive groves with Romanesque parish churches and historic sites. This creates a destination where culture, landscapes and routes of varying lengths can be combined, without any single theme defining the surroundings.

Paths through hills, vineyards and olive groves

The hiking trail network around Rignano sull'Arno runs through forests, hills, rural areas and places of historical interest. One specific option is the easy circular route “Discover Rignano – Pievi, Chiese e Castelli”. It begins at the Pieve di San Leolino, is 10.8 kilometres long and takes 3 hours 30 minutes; the elevation gain is listed as 283 metres. The route therefore combines a longer, clearly measured hike with the churches and castles that shape the character of the area. The easy Anello di Volognano starts in Bombone, covers 8.5 kilometres and takes 3 hours. Its route passes through olive groves, vineyards and fortified villages, offering views of the Arno Valley and the Pratomagno massif. The Sentiero della Memoria from the Cimitero della Badiuzza is shorter: the easy circular route measures 5 kilometres, takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and has an elevation gain of 130 metres. These three details help you distinguish between outings of different lengths without reducing the landscape to a single viewpoint.

Churches, castles and places of remembrance

Among the notable cultural sites is Castello di Volognano, a complex dating from the 11th century whose walls enclose a fortified village. Castelluccio was first mentioned in documents in 1086 under the Latin name Castellum de Regnano. Since at least the 1980s, the site has been known and visited as an archaeological area with significant medieval remains. The ruins of the fortified site lie in a small olive grove on the grounds of Fattoria di Pagnana. The Ponte di Rignano, also called Ponte Mediceo or Ponte San Clemente, is considered the oldest bridge in the Valdarno and connects the two banks of the Arno at Rignano. At Villa Il Focardo, another historical reference commemorates the massacre of members of the Einstein-Mazzetti family on 3 August 1944. The family grave in the Cimitero della Badiuzza is a destination for visits and moments of remembrance. The Pieve di San Leolino is probably one of the oldest Romanesque parish churches in the area around Florence. It contains a fragment of the fresco “Madonna della Consolazione” by Bicci di Lorenzo. Reservations are specified for visits on weekdays; on Saturdays and Sundays, visits are scheduled during Mass. The Abbey of Santa Maria is located in Rosano, within the municipality of Rignano sull'Arno. It was founded in 780 and has ever since housed a cloistered Benedictine community of women. The abbey church also contains a painted depiction of the Crucifixion dating to the 12th century, which was recently restored by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.
