Poppiano: Castle, Wine and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Poppiano
Explore Poppiano through its castle, its history of wine and olive growing, and a cycling route that takes in eight castles. When planning your trip, you can bring together a specific cultural site, agricultural tradition, and a bike tour.
Castello di Poppiano: History and Tours
In the Middle Ages, Castello di Poppiano was part of Florence’s defensive system. For centuries, the Fattoria around the castle was an agricultural center for the Guicciardini family. The site’s history therefore encompasses both the castle’s military role and the estate’s long association with the family and agriculture.
The Vinsantaia is located in the castle’s main tower. Tours of the castle include a visit to the cellar where wine is matured and aged. If this part of the visit is important to you, check before you arrive whether the cellar visit is included in the tour scheduled for your date.
Wine, Olives, and the View from the Tower
Wine and olive oil were traditionally produced in Poppiano in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Fattoria del Castello di Poppiano currently covers 265 hectares, including 140 hectares of vineyards.
The terrace at the top of the tower offers views over Poppiano’s vineyards and olive groves. From this elevated vantage point, you can see the two types of cultivation that also feature in the estate’s history.
Cycle to Eight Castles
The approximately 30-kilometer cycling route “Pista ciclabile degli 8 castelli” leads to Castello di Poppiano and passes a total of eight castles. Poppiano is therefore connected not only with the history of its own castle, but is also a stop on a route featuring several castles. The approximate distance can help you plan the tour as a separate activity in your day.
There is a drinking water point on the cycling route at the castle, in front of the church. Cyclists can refill their bottles there. If needed, check that it is available before including the water point in your plans.
“La Madia dei Sapori”: Dining for a Charitable Cause
“La Madia dei Sapori” is an annual charity dinner held at Castello Guicciardini di Poppiano in collaboration with the Misericordia di Montespertoli. At the 2026 event, on Wednesday, July 8, at 8 p.m. in the castle courtyard, a Tuscan menu and wines from the castle were served. Proceeds went to people in need in the community.
If you would like to include the dinner in your travel plans, check the date of the relevant event separately. The 2026 date does not apply to subsequent years; the menu details may also vary at future events.
Poppiano and Choosing Your Accommodation
When looking for a hotel for your trip to Poppiano, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on: the castle’s history, the landscape of vineyards and olive groves, or the cycling route. This can help you decide whether you want to spend your days exploring the historic site, enjoying the landscape, or cycling, and choose your accommodation accordingly.
