Ponzalla – MuGot, Gothic Line and Passo del Giogo

Ponzalla makes the history of the Gothic Line, routes through the Apennines and a distinctive mountain pass route the immediate focus of a trip. At the center is the MuGot – Museo Gotica Toscana, a place where this history becomes tangible. The MuGot and the history of the Gothic Line

The MuGot – Museo Gotica Toscana was founded in 2011. It preserves the memory of the battles fought in September 1944 between German troops and the Allies in the Apennines north of Florence. The exhibition consists of four large halls in the Ponzalla district. There, visitors, researchers and school classes will find various battlefield installations as well as numerous museum objects from the Second World War. The combination of indoor spaces and historical sites makes the visit multifaceted in terms of content: You will not only see museum objects, but can also engage with the battlefield installations and the traces of the Gothic Line. A booking at the MuGot is required for visits to the battlefield. This also applies to tours of the battlefield in a nine-seater van. This distinguishes the experience from a purely museum visit; exploring the grounds and taking the tour are offered as separate forms of visiting.

Bunkers, installations and routes at Passo del Giogo

Bunkers and installations along a ridge at least 5 kilometers long around Passo del Giogo can be visited by prior appointment. The installations of the Gothic Line are also part of several themed hiking trails that can be combined with a visit to the MuGot. For your day planning, this means that you can choose the museum visit as an independent cultural focus or combine it with a more extensive exploration of the grounds and the historical waypoints. Another hiking route initially leads from Passo del Giogo along the marked forest path of trails 00 and SO.F.T. After approximately 400 meters, it branches through a forest toward Monte Altuzzo. This approximate distance is intended to provide orientation on the route; it describes the point at which the path changes direction, not the length of the entire hike. Ponzalla also offers a clearly defined reference point for a drive through the surrounding area. After leaving Scarperia, the route “Tra curve e tornanti del Passo del Giogo” leads via Ponzalla on a 10-kilometer climb to Passo del Giogo. This means that the area can be explored both through its military-historical sites and via a mountain pass route and the paths that continue from it.

A place with specific memorials

The historical character also includes the Monumento ai Caduti del 363° Reggimento Fanteria US. The monument lists the names of 436 soldiers of the 363rd US Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, who were killed in combat in this area. The monument complements the exhibitions, bunkers and installations with a clearly identified memorial and gives the visit another specific connection to the history of the area.
