Ponte Agli Stolli – Hiking Trails and Historical Traces

Circular Hiking Route and Via dei Monaci

The Anello Ponte agli Stolli–Sugame–Badia Montescalari–Castello di Celle circular hiking route starts and ends in Ponte agli Stolli and is approximately 20 kilometres long. The route includes around 600 metres of elevation gain and is also classified as difficulty level EE. When choosing this tour, you should therefore take into account both its approximate length and elevation difference, as well as its difficulty rating. The Via dei Monaci offers another connection for hikers. One of its stages descends through the valley of Castello di Celle and then reaches Ponte agli Stolli. The second stage also reaches Ponte agli Stolli. It follows old paths associated with pilgrims travelling to the Pieve di Cintoia. Thus, alongside the longer circular hike, there is also a route whose character is shaped by historical connections between roads and paths.

Bridge, Mills, and Old Roads

The medieval bridge of Ponte agli Stolli still features stone structures forming the bases of its pillars. In the older part of the village, traces of the former complex consisting of three mills have also been preserved. The bridge has been of great importance since Roman times because a road ran across it. In the Middle Ages, the road over Ponte agli Stolli was also used for journeys from Valdarno to Florence or Chianti. A later, much more modern connection with the road is the 16th Rally di Reggello-Figline e Incisa Valdarno, held on 15 and 16 June 2024: the “Figline” special stage began in Ponte agli Stolli and ended in Stecco. This date is part of the history of the event and should not be understood as a current date.

Gorges and Water Routes

The stream flowing through Ponte agli Stolli has carved impressive gorges that attract canyoning enthusiasts every year. Ponte agli Stolli also has easy water routes, the final section of which leads to the so-called Pozza del Diavolo.
