Petrognano connects the memory of Semifonte with visible medieval traces and two trails with distinct characteristics. For your trip to Tuscany, this creates a clear focus combining culture and activity: you can explore the history of the borgo or discover the area’s historical and natural features on foot.

Semifonte and the History of the Borgo

Alberto IV degli Alberti founded the fortress of Semifonte in the third quarter of the 12th century. The former city of Semifonte was destroyed by the Florentines in 1202. Petrognano is the borgo outside this former city. The two names therefore refer to different historical landmarks: Semifonte to the city that once stood here, and Petrognano to the borgo where traces of its history remain visible.

These traces include the remains of Semifonte’s walls and old buildings, still visible in Petrognano. Together with the stone houses, they preserve the medieval atmosphere of the place. Villa-Fattoria Capponi is the center of the Petrognano-Semifonte settlement. The village landscape thus brings together surviving building remains and a named focal point of the settlement.

Chapel Architecture and an Older Work of Art

The Cappella di San Michele Arcangelo was built between 1592 and 1597 at the instigation of Canon Giovanni Battista Capponi. Its dome is a scale replica of the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore. Those interested in architecture can see a specific relationship between an original and its replica here: the chapel draws on the dome’s design and recreates it on a different scale.

The ground floor of the Cappella di San Michele a Semifonte serves as an exhibition space and is run in collaboration with the local Pro Loco and Gruppo Archeologico Achu. Another artistic record is the Cristo di Petrognano, a painted wooden sculpture dating from the first half of the 13th century. It comes from the church of San Pietro a Petrognano. Its provenance and dating complement the architectural evidence with a specific connection to the area’s history of religious art.

Two Trails, Different Highlights

Le briglie sul torrente Agliena is a historical and nature trail along the Agliena Grande and Agliena Piccolo streams. Farther along, the borgo of Petrognano and the hill of Semifonte come into view before the trail descends toward the Agliena Valley. The route description thus links the streams with a sequence of places in which Petrognano and Semifonte also feature.

The loop trail Anello Barberino–Semifonte reaches the borgo of Petrognano via uphill forest paths. The two routes therefore differ in the features described: Le briglie sul torrente Agliena runs along two streams and continues toward the Agliena Valley; the loop trail reaches Petrognano via uphill forest paths. When planning, you can choose whether to focus on the connection to the waterways or the route to the borgo.

How to Include Petrognano in Your Trip to Tuscany

Petrognano offers concrete points of interest for a trip that combines culture and activity: the history of Semifonte, the chapel’s architecture, and the provenance of the Cristo di Petrognano introduce different cultural and historical themes. The two trails offer a different emphasis and have distinct, explicitly described features. If you are looking for accommodation for your trip to Tuscany, Petrognano can be considered a destination with a clear focus on historical heritage and walking routes.
