Discover Meleto: Village History, Art and Remembrance

Meleto is an ancient village documented in records since 970 AD. Its special character lies in the combination of village history, sacred art, contemporary sculptures and places of remembrance. Those looking for accommodation in Meleto will find above all a destination for a culture-focused getaway, with historical traces and a thoughtfully designed walking route at its heart.

Village history between church and castle complex

The Church of Santa Cristina has a distinctive 17th-century style and is an important cultural reference point in the village. The history of the surrounding area also reaches far back: the Cassia Adrianea ran from Barberino through Meleto. For a time, Meleto was the seat of the so-called “Liga de Vallis Avane”; the village was also home to the Società Filarmonica di Meleto. These details are part of a local history that is not limited to a single building. The Castello di Barberino is also located near Meleto. The complex consists of four watchtowers and a perimeter wall.

Meleto Memory Route and places of remembrance

A particularly moving experience is the Meleto Memory Route. The walking route leads through the village’s Aie and to the places where German soldiers, supported by some Fascists, murdered 93 innocent men from the village on July 4, 1944. The Meleto massacre took place at four execution sites identified by name: Aia Benini, Aia Melani, Aia Pasquini and Aia Rossini. At the same time, the Meleto Memory Route offers a contemplative walk featuring works and poems by the artist Massimo Lippi from 1999. History and artistic design thus stand side by side within the same route. In front of the Circolo Sociale di Meleto is a renovated public green space. It contains both the restored monument to the victims of the First World War and a new memorial to the victims of the massacres of July 1944.

Sculptures, art park and local festival

Meleto also reveals a more recent artistic side. The three sculptures installed in the village were created by the Korean artist Yunmi Lee, the Chinese artist Jiefu Zhou and the Iranian artist Solmaz Vilkachi. They originated from the International Symposium for Monumental Sculpture “Pietra Sublime” and were intended, together with an existing sculpture, to form a small art park. This gives visitors another way to engage with the village, extending beyond its historic buildings and memorial sites. Another form of local culture is the Festa del Re Maiale. This is a medieval historical re-enactment held as part of the Feste del Perdono. The festival complements the permanently visible evidence of history and art with an event centered on historical representation.

Getting around the village

An accessible footpath connects the public car park below the Church of Meleto with the school administration area. This connection is particularly relevant for getting around locally if you are planning your visit around the church, village and the memorial and art sites documented there. For further exploration, you can also include Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni, Montaio Montaio and Montegonzi Montegonzi.
