Luco Mugello between Landscape and History

Luco Mugello combines a protected landscape with trails that link several characteristic points in the surrounding area. The landscape zone is protected under a landscape protection decree dated 18 May 1966. The Apennines of Casaglia form a distinctive backdrop. The protected zone and the Apennines of Casaglia, named as its backdrop, therefore come together in the landscape. For your travel planning, this creates a place where natural surroundings, trail connections and local history stand closely side by side, without requiring you to focus on just one way of exploring.

Two Hiking Trails with Different Routes

Sentiero 36 runs from the square in Luco di Mugello via Grezzano and Mansalto to Varco Acquabona. Sentiero 40 connects Luco di Mugello and Grezzano with Passo del Giogo; its route leads via Volpinaia and the forest reserve.

After Grezzano, the Mugello Cristiano route reaches Luco di Mugello.

Grezzano is therefore mentioned in several connections: along both Sentieri, on the Mugello Cristiano route and in the road connection to the Museo Casa d’Erci. The two Sentieri refer to hiking routes, while the connection to the Museo Casa d’Erci is by road.

Luco di Mugello as a Gateway to Other Places

The Museo Casa d’Erci is also connected with Luco di Mugello: it can be reached by road through Luco di Mugello and Grezzano. For orientation in the area, this documents a specific road connection, while the two Sentieri offer a separate way to explore the surroundings via named trail sections.

Local Memories and Culture

A special local story is associated with Fido. For more than 14 years, he went every day to the bus stop in the square in Luco, until his death on 8 June 1958. The story is therefore one of the specific memories that give the square additional historical significance alongside its function as the starting point of Sentiero 36.

The history of the San Pietro in Luco monastery began in 1086. At that time, Blessed Rodolfo Falcucci acquired land and an oratory in Chisciano in order to establish a Camaldolese nuns’ monastery there. Another cultural and historical reference dates to 1527: at that time, the nuns of Luco sheltered a prominent Florentine painter who sought refuge in Luco from the plague raging mainly in Florence. The two events represent different historical contexts: 1086 concerns the founding of the nuns’ monastery, while 1527 concerns a painter’s refuge during the plague. These two details show different layers of the area’s history – the monastery’s origins and a specific episode from the time of the plague.
