Londa between the Lake, Forest and Local Culture

Londa combines nature experiences and local history within a compact thematic area. The town lies on the edge of the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna National Park. On the shore of the artificial Lago di Londa, the “L’Uomo e il Paesaggio” visitor centre offers a special way to engage with the landscape: it explores the relationship between the natural environment and the changes to the area caused by human intervention over the centuries.

A Lake as a Starting Point for Nature Topics

The visitor centre is not merely a place for a brief introduction. Its facilities include a laboratory corner set up for educational purposes, a computer with internet access, a library and a binocular microscope. This provides various ways to engage with the landscape and nature. Lago di Londa is also a fishing destination, adding another local dimension to the visitor centre’s focus on natural history.

Hiking Trails and the Foresta di Rincine

Londa offers several distinctly different trail experiences for active days. The Sentiero per Londa is a 12-kilometre circular hike. In the Foresta di Rincine, by contrast, 26 kilometres of hiking and educational trails are available for exploring the surroundings. The Foresta di Rincine is a model forest and belongs to an international network of more than sixty model forests worldwide. Those looking for a single circular hike will therefore find a different scale here than in a forest area with an extensive network of hiking and educational trails.

Rocca, Piazza and Etruscan Traces

Londa’s culture can also be explored through various themes, without treating them as a single historical complex. The Londa route includes the Rocca dei Conti Guidi. Piazza Umberto I is a natural amphitheatre and is often used for events and performances. In the small hamlet of La Lastra, there are also rock carvings of Etruscan origin. Each of these three places represents a different point of access: medieval history, a public venue for events and archaeological traces.

Festa di Settembre and Pesca Regina

Local festival traditions have a distinctive place here. The Festa di Settembre is associated with the second weekend in September; its introduction dates back to the 1960s. Its highlight is the presentation of the Pesca d’Argento. The award goes to the producer who has submitted the best crate of the late-season peach variety Pesca Regina, which is typical of this area. The festival description thus brings together a specific agricultural producer, a regional variety and a festive competition.

There is an intercity bus connection from Florence. Alternatively, you can take the train to Contea-Londa and then continue by bus.
