Impruneta – Ceramics, Cultural Heritage and Tuscan Hills
Impruneta combines a distinctive ceramics tradition with religious heritage, lively festivals and a hilly landscape between the Ema stream and the Greve River. Vineyards, olive groves, forests and grain fields shape the surrounding area. Terracotta and local craft tradition
The production of bricks and terracotta has a long tradition in Impruneta. The material known as cotto imprunetino became a characteristic element of Tuscan architecture and landscape. The C.A.T. mark for artistic and traditional ceramics is subject to particularly precise regulations: it may be used exclusively by Impruneta producers registered in the C.A.T. manufacturers' register. In addition, the marked works must have been produced in kilns within the municipality of Impruneta and comply with the relevant regulations.
An unusual addition to the history of ceramics is the Galleria Drenante. The drainage gallery is 171.1 metres long and was excavated by hand in the second half of the 19th century. The Commenda Impruneta also points to an older function of the town: it was founded in 1746 to provide accommodation and assistance to pilgrims on their way to the sanctuary of Impruneta.
Sanctuary, museum and events venue
The Santuario di Santa Maria in Impruneta was founded in 1060. The Museo del Tesoro di Santa Maria forms part of the religious and art-historical setting. It preserves votive offerings, sacred works of art, illuminated manuscripts, 15th-century textiles, silverware and terracotta objects. The collection therefore ranges from personal religious offerings to arts-and-crafts and liturgical objects.
The Loggiato del Pellegrino is important for finding your way around Impruneta. The municipality's tourist information office is located there. The site also provides space for exhibitions, concerts, artistic performances, conferences and leisure events. The entrance is at ground level and accessible to people with disabilities. Festivals, markets and regional cuisine
The Fiera di San Luca is one of Europe's oldest livestock fairs. It takes place during the week that includes 18 October, the feast day of Impruneta's patron saint. Today's programme includes food markets, arts-and-crafts markets, art exhibitions, as well as cultural and leisure events. The fair thus combines its historical designation with a broader programme of events.
The Festa dell'Uva dell'Impruneta also has a long history and has been shaped since 1932 by four Rioni: Rione delle Sante Marie, Rione del Sant'Antonio, Rione delle Fornaci and Rione del Pallò. They compete against one another with allegorical floats, costumes and choreographies. Local cuisine includes Peposo all'imprunetina, a dish traditionally associated with the openings of the kilns in which Impruneta's terracotta was fired.
Landscape and routes
The location between the Ema and Greve makes the landscape a distinct part of the stay. Vineyards and olive groves stand alongside forests and grain fields; together with the hilly topography, they create a succession of rural impressions that clearly differs from a purely cultural programme. For active days, the Anello del Rinascimento is also a documented route that can be travelled on foot or by bicycle.
