Dicomano: Culture between Mugello and Val di Sieve
Accommodation in Dicomano
Dicomano between rivers, forests, and cultural heritage
Dicomano brings together two distinct landscapes: here, the Comano River flows into the Sieve, while the surrounding area connects the mountain landscapes of Mugello with the valley areas of Val di Sieve. Green beech, oak, and chestnut forests grow on the slopes. This creates a place for planning your trip where you do not have to view cultural heritage and a distinctive landscape as opposites.Architecture and archaeology
A striking example of Dicomano as a cultural destination is the Oratorio di Sant’Onofrio. It was built in 1796 to a design by the Florentine architect Giuseppe Del Rosso and is considered an example of Italian Neoclassicism. Its interior has a central plan and is crowned by a dome resting on sixteen columns with Corinthian capitals. The Oratorio therefore provides a clearly defined focus on architectural history among the local attractions. A different period is represented by the Museo Archeologico comprensoriale. Its collections include finds and excavation results from the Etruscan archaeological site of San Martino a Frascole. The museum also preserves archaeological and historical evidence from the entire Mugello, Alto Mugello, and Val di Sieve areas. For specific planning, it is important to note that the museum is also accessible to people with reduced mobility, but has been closed until further notice since March 31, 2026, due to renovation work. The archaeological area of Frascole includes the remains of the small church of San Martino, built in the mid-13th century. The finds also include a well-preserved Fiesolan-type funerary stele from the 6th century BC. The excavations also encompass the significant remains of a large Etruscan building, identified either as a sanctuary or a defensive structure. This cautious classification is part of what makes the site distinctive: the building’s function has not been determined conclusively. The San Martino a Poggio – Frascole area is part of Tuscany’s archaeological route. Another trekking route listed by the Municipality of Dicomano is the Sentiero degli Etruschi – Anello D. Its stated sequence is Pista Ciclabile – Sandetole – Scavi Frascole – La Cella – Ponte Vecchio.Trails and landscape experiences
The Sentiero Piandrati – Il Lago – Anello E begins at Piazza della Repubblica and leads to the A. Bartolozzi cycle and pedestrian path. Along the way, the Sentiero Piandrati – Il Lago – Anello E offers panoramic views as well as examples of medieval and Renaissance architecture. The route therefore has a different focus from the archaeological remains of Frascole: the emphasis is on landscapes and historic architectural forms along the way. If you are looking for accommodation in Dicomano, you can choose the focus of your days accordingly: cultural highlights around the Oratorio, museum, and Frascole, or landscape experiences between the river, valley, and wooded slopes.
