Consuma: Forest Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Consuma
Consuma combines a forested landscape with hiking trails and a distinct local history. Dense beech, fir, oak, chestnut, and pine forests surround the village. The landscape also includes sweet chestnut groves created through clearing and grafting. For your trip planning, this places a clear emphasis on nature and outdoor activity; the church and local cultural themes add a historical dimension.
Forest and Trails as the Focus of Your Trip
The section from Consuma to Stia is the third stage of the Via di Francesco in Tuscany, on the route from Florence to La Verna. The Via di Francesco is a religious, thematic, and historical hiking trail through the Apennines. A hiking trail from Pomino or Madonna del Sasso also passes through Consuma. The “L'acqua.. Moscia!” trail starts at Passo della Consuma. It was designed and tested for use with the specially adapted Joëlette Adventure one-wheeled wheelchair, so people with mobility impairments can also use it. The routes offer different experiences: a named stage of the Via di Francesco, a trail that passes through Consuma, or a route explicitly developed for the Joëlette.
In winter, snowshoe hikes and crampon outings are offered at Passo della Consuma. Whether these activities are possible on your travel dates depends on snow conditions and trail safety. Check conditions before setting out if you are planning such an outing.
Church and Culture in Consuma
Consuma’s church was built in 1932 to a design by architect Padre Franci, over an older chapel dating from the 16th century. It is designed in the modern Romanesque style and has three naves and two rows of columns. The three naves divide the church interior, while the rows of columns structure it. This brings two clearly distinct building phases together in one place: the older chapel and the 20th-century building.
The annual commemorative event includes a hike starting from Albergo Nuovo in Consuma. The 2025 program lists 9:30 a.m. as the start time; check the date before traveling to a future edition. “Consuma e le sue stelle,” an annual poetry competition for children, is another part of the village’s cultural life. Travelers with different interests can weigh up whether to focus more on forests and hiking or on local history and culture when planning their trip.
