The Pieve di San Cassiano in Padule

The Pieve di San Cassiano in Padule has very ancient origins. They date back to the Lombard period of the 8th century AD. This makes the Pieve one of Caselle’s notable historical points of reference. Its long history gives a stay a cultural dimension that extends beyond simply travelling through the landscape. After visiting the Pieve, an approximately 8 km-long, scenic unpaved road leads towards Gattaia. The approximate length helps with planning the day when culture and the experience of the route are to be combined. The historic point of reference and the CAI route set different priorities: the Pieve represents a long history, while the route represents concrete movement through the landscape.

Trails on foot and by mountain bike

Il Mugello che non si arrende uses CAI trails 12, 11, 11B, 9, 9A and 56, as well as SOFT routes 5, 6 and 17. The route numbers listed distinguish the individual sections and help with orientation along the route. On foot, Il Mugello che non si arrende is considered a double loop. The mountain bike variant, by contrast, uses only the southern loop and runs in the opposite direction. The choice between the two options therefore depends on more than just the mode of transport: the variants also differ in the extent of the loop and the direction of travel. Those who want to experience the entire loop described can choose the walking variant; those travelling by mountain bike follow the southern loop in the opposite direction.

Places of remembrance and religious markers

The Lapide Martiri di Campo di Marte tells of sacrifice and struggle. The place of remembrance provides a distinct focus alongside the Pieve’s far-reaching history. While the Pieve points to the Lombard period in the 8th century AD, the memorial plaque focuses on human actions and the remembrance associated with them. During the Rogazioni, prayers are recited along the route. Tabernacles and re-erected crosses are also blessed. The custom connects the route with a religious observance that includes prayers and blessings. In this way, travelling through the area gains a religious dimension alongside the landscape and historic sites.
