Bruscoli combines vivid local history with paths through the landscape and an excursion area offering something for a variety of interests. At its heart is the Museo Storico Etnografico di Bruscoli: its three departments preserve finds, documents and true-to-scale reconstructions. This cultural profile is complemented by historic sites near Poggio Rocca, the Church of San Martino and the section of the Via degli Dei that leads down to Bruscoli.

The Museo Storico Etnografico di Bruscoli

The museum is housed in Bruscoli’s former primary school and is located on the SP 59 between Passo della Futa and Pian del Voglio. Its setting alone makes a visit a tangible part of the town’s history: the exhibition is not housed in an arbitrary new building, but in a former school building. The three departments use different forms of historical presentation. Finds and documents convey surviving evidence, while true-to-scale reconstructions make historical contexts spatially imaginable. The department dedicated to the Gothic Line is particularly distinctive. It presents Second World War military relics in the context of the Gothic Line, a line of fortifications that crossed the Apennines. The German army built it to prevent the Allied advance northward. The museum’s thematic scope thus extends from regional everyday and local history to an important chapter in the wartime history of the Apennines.

Poggio Rocca and San Martino

Another focal point is Poggio Rocca. The first known mention of the fortified site at Poggio Rocca near Bruscoli comes from an imperial charter issued by Frederick Barbarossa in 1164. This specific reference makes clear that the area’s history extends far beyond the recent past. On the summit of Poggio La Rocca near Bruscoli, at an elevation of 812 m, are the remains of the Rocca di San Martino. They are the remains of a castle that once belonged to the Counts Alberti di Magona. As the archaeological site of Rocca di San Martino, the location lies approximately 1 km southwest of the Bruscoli hamlet in the locality of Poggio Rocca, also at an elevation of 812 m. The Church of San Martino also bears a clearly documented historical layer. It was rebuilt in 1923 and occupied the eastern part of an earlier church that was still standing in ruins at the beginning of the 20th century. Those interested in historical development therefore encounter several periods in Bruscoli: the medieval mention of the fortified site, the remains of the former castle complex and the rebuilding of the church in the 20th century.

Via degli Dei and La Cascata

Bruscoli also lies along a described connection of the Via degli Dei. On the third stage, a comfortable lane leads down to Bruscoli near Il Capannone. This passage is part of the route description and provides a clear focus for visitors discovering the town in connection with this route. For more peaceful excursions, the “La Cascata” walking and excursion area is located at Via Bruscoli Bitoio, 50033 Firenzuola (FI). It is suitable for families, hikers and nature photography enthusiasts. This place thus complements the historical themes with a landscape-oriented opportunity combining movement, time outdoors and observing nature. If you would then like to select another destination, you will also find Traversa (Traversa).
