Salutio brings together several cultural and historical perspectives with a guided nature experience. The private Mulino del Bonano, the Pieve di Sant’Eleuterio and the castle each represent different themes; in addition, there are horse-riding trails through forests and open areas with views of the natural landscape. The topics thus range from a watermill, sacred art and local history to a guided outdoor activity. When planning, it is worth considering culture and horse riding separately: prior contact is required to visit the mill, and you should confirm whether the riding experience is available.

Mulino del Bonano and the water route

According to a municipal website updated on July 16, 2025, the privately owned Mulino del Bonano still operates with its waterwheel and processes local produce. The Ecomuseo del Casentino’s water route, or watermill trail, includes the mill in Salutio. Since it is privately owned, contact the owners in advance to check whether access is possible and, if available, to see a practical demonstration of the milling process.

Pieve di Sant’Eleuterio: architecture and frescoes

The Pieve di Sant’Eleuterio in Salutio is a Romanesque church with Byzantine influences and Baroque elements. It preserves 15th-century frescoes by Mariotto da Cristofano, a painter from Valdarno. The baptismal font also has a distinctive art-historical feature: its base is probably made from a reused column, while its painted decoration dates back to the 16th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the frescoes from the later painted decoration of the baptismal font as works from two different periods.

Castle and Castello

The castle of Salutio is documented from the beginning of the 12th century. Over the centuries, it was converted into an aristocratic palace and served as the residence of the noble Teri family. The settlement above Salutio is still called Castello today. The castle’s history thus stretches from its earliest recorded mention to its later use as an aristocratic residence.

Horse-riding trails through forests and open countryside

A description from January 2023 mentions numerous horse-riding trails at the Centro Ippico Antares in Salutio, accompanied by a riding guide. The trails pass through forests and offer views of the natural landscape from open areas. If you would like to include horse riding in your travel plans, confirm availability before your trip. The alternation of forest stretches and open views characterizes the landscape of this guided activity.
