Pratieghi in Tuscany combines a largely wooded landscape with hiking trails and a rich sacred history. At its heart are the ANPIL Nuclei di Taxus Baccata di Pratieghi protected area, its yew trees and trails of varying types. Also of interest are the parish church of Santa Maria and a pilgrimage tradition linked to the route to Valdazze. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether you want to focus mainly on nature and hiking or also explore the area’s historical connections.

A wooded protected area and its yew trees

The protected area is largely wooded and is notable for the rare Tilio-Acerion forest type and an unusually large number of yew trees (Taxus baccata). The yews grow to more than six metres there, and some specimens reach ten metres. This gives the area a distinctive character: it is defined by a particular forest type and a remarkable population of yew trees, not simply a wooded backdrop for excursions. Those interested in woodland nature will find a clear focus for their time in Pratieghi in this combination of two features.

Hiking trails with different profiles

The Cammino di San Francesco is a 12 km circular trail starting in Pratieghi, with 430 metres of elevation gain and an E difficulty rating. Another hike starts at the Pratieghi car park. An older CAI trail description follows the signed P16 trail to the source of the Marecchia, reached after about 45 minutes. There is also a nature trail loop from Pratieghi through the protected area.

The trails offer different ways to plan your outing: for the Cammino, the key details are its circular route, total distance, elevation gain and difficulty rating; on the P16 hike, the destination is the source, reached after about 45 minutes. This time should therefore not be taken as the duration of the 12 km circular trail. Check conditions for the Cammino and nature trail loop before setting out. For the older CAI trail, check current trail conditions locally.

Church, river and pilgrimage tradition

Pratieghi is the first village through which the waters of the Marecchia River flow. The parish church of Santa Maria in Pratieghi dates back to 1499. The route between Pratieghi and Valdazze is also part of the pilgrimage tradition: it was used, among others, by San Francesco and by pilgrims travelling from the Adriatic coast to the Santuario della Verna or Assisi.

The main sacred shrine in Pratieghi is near the ancient Franciscan hospice of La Verna, which is a private building. Pratieghi is also associated with the “Festa tra i monti”. These local connections add a historical perspective to the hikes, without requiring nature and history to be treated as separate subjects.

Considering Pratieghi as a place to stay

If you want to focus on nature and hiking, factor the different trail profiles and checking conditions into your daily plans. If you are more interested in local history, the parish church, pilgrimage route and sacred shrine offer specific points of interest. This can help you decide whether Pratieghi suits a trip that combines time on the trails and in nature with historical interests.
