Pogi: Castle, Churches and Trails along the Ambra

Pogi combines its location on the banks of the Ambra River with an unusually clearly recognizable castle history and several named trails. Castle History around Two Small Squares

Pogi Castle, together with the stone houses, forms an ensemble around two small squares. Two towers at the castle are documented for the year 1261. This date is therefore one of the tangible historical reference points of the place. The castle extends southwest toward the Casa al Papa estate and the forests of Castiglion Alberti.

San Donato, a Painting and La Madonna

The Church of San Donato is the last artistic testimony to the long history of Pogi Castle. The church also houses a painting from the Florentine school, attributed to the end of the 16th century. The painting is thus assigned to a considerably later period than the castle towers documented for 1261. When selecting cultural destinations, it is therefore not only the name of the church that is relevant, but also its connection to a specific art-historical classification.

The religious heritage also includes the La Madonna Oratory, as it is called locally. It is dedicated to the Virgin of SS. Consolazione. Its designation and dedication form an independent point of reference alongside San Donato and the castle history.

The trails around Pogi have also been handed down under their own names. The circular trail is called “Anello Bucine – Pogi – Castiglion Alberti – Montozzii”. In addition, the Bucine–Pogi–Castiglion Alberti–Capannole route is designated as Percorso No. 3 and is approximately 8 kilometers long. Another route is called “La terrazza sul Valdarno”. It follows CAI Trail 127a to a group of houses known as Pogi Alta. In the trail descriptions, Pogi therefore appears not only as the name of a single place, but also in connection with a group of houses identified as being higher up and a marked section of trail.

Ancient Connection and Paved Road

The Roman bridge of Pogi is part of the area’s older transportation history. It stood at a junction of the ancient consular road Cassia Adrianea, which connected Rome with Florence. An old paved road also passes by the Fonte dell’Imbuta.
