Moncioni between the Pinetum and history

Moncioni combines a distinctive landscape setting with historical traces and clearly distinguishable experiences. Near the village lies the Pinetum on the slopes of the Monti del Chianti facing the Valdarno, at an altitude of 540 to 568 metres. There is also an easy loop through the forests, a small church with paintings from the 17th century and evidence of a medieval fortification.

Pinetum and landscape

The Pinetum di Moncioni is a significant collection of exotic and non-exotic conifers from the 19th century. The protected area was established to preserve and enhance this collection. The altitude and the orientation of the slopes towards the Valdarno give the site a clear landscape setting, without its history appearing merely as a backdrop. A specific way to explore the surroundings on foot is offered by the loop trail “Anello – Moncioni – Monte Muro – Moncioni –”. The easy route leads through the forests near Moncioni. On the ridge towards Monte Muro, it reaches approximately 780 metres at its highest point. The route therefore describes its own landscape area above the Pinetum’s starting elevation: the loop leads not only through the forest, but also onto a ridge with a significantly higher point.

Villa park and historical traces

Villa Gaeta is a 17th-century villa that was remodelled in the mid-19th century in the Victorian eclectic style. Its park was transformed into a collection of conifers from all over the world. As part of an artist-in-residence project, emerging artists are hosted there every summer. Architecture, garden and contemporary art form three distinct levels of a cultural site here. The history of the village can also be read in several specific traces. The Castello di Moncioni is mentioned in a document dated 25 March 1084, which is kept in the archive of the Badia di Coltibuono. The property later passed as a fief to the Counts Guidi. The bell tower visible when entering the borgo was part of the old fortification wall. The small Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Moncioni also contains paintings from the 17th century.
