Frassineta: a small village with an unusually rich history

Frassineta combines a medieval character with mountain views and several precisely described hiking and cycling routes. An uphill path leads to the small village, dominated by its church. If you would like to combine a culturally oriented trip with days spent in the countryside, you will find historical evidence, paths through the Casentino and views reaching as far as distinctive mountains in a small area here.

From the Curtis to the fortified settlement

The origins of Frassineta date back to around the 10th century. At that time, the village was a rural “CURTIS”, meaning an agricultural settlement managed by a wealthy landowner. An entry from June 1019 reports that Pietro, the son of donna Angantuada, donated one third of a house in Frassineta to the Badia di Prataglia. This early written reference also makes the village interesting for visitors who want to trace historical developments not only through major buildings, but also through concrete evidence of everyday life in the Middle Ages.

Around 1200, Frassineta was surrounded by walls. Within the fortifications stood the church, the watchtower, the square, and the lordly and administrative seat. In the Middle Ages, the village also lay along the Via Romea and was a transit point for pilgrims. The watchtower is a medieval structure used for defense and observation. Its square ground plan measures approximately four meters on each side. Particularly striking is its stepped base, considered unique in the Casentino and reminiscent of Roman buildings.

Church, Chapel and Evidence of Village Life

The parish church of Sant’Egidio is part of the village’s historic character. It has a single-nave layout, a slightly raised high altar and two side altars. One is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the other to Saint Anthony Abbot. The Cappellina contains a terracotta Madonna known as the Madonna of the Seven Swords or Madonna of the Seven Sorrows, which is venerated by the people of Frassineta.

Smaller landmarks also add to the character of the village. The fountain and washhouse bear the coat of arms of Camaldoli. The church also contains a white banner with a blue cross, made from the silk of a parachute. In Frassineta, medieval fortifications, religious art and memories of the village’s more recent history thus come together.

Mountain Views and Trails through the Countryside

From Frassineta, there is a wide view across the mountain range, from Monte Zuccherodante at 1,224 m via Montalto at 1,291 m and Poggio Tre Vescovi at 1,232 m to Monte Penna. Corezzo, surrounded by woods and meadows, is also part of the view. The landscape can be experienced along several routes in different ways.

CAI Trail 073 leads from Frassineta via Poggio della Cesta towards Badia Prataglia. The National Park route Anello 4 “Da Rifugio a Rifugio” runs from Bagno di Romagna via Nasseto and Passo Serra through Corezzo and Frassineta to Badia Prataglia. For a longer loop, the Vallesanta map lists a 4.5-hour hike via Poggio della Forca, Rimbocchi, Aioli, Scappruggine, Molino di Corezzo and Corezzo, returning to Frassineta. This circular hike passes through Turkey oak forests and the ruins of the Bellaria farmstead.

Frassineta is also part of a specific mountain biking route. MTB Route 05 leads from Badia Prataglia via Frassineta, Biforco, Passo Serra and Passo Mandrioli back to Badia Prataglia. Along this route, the monumental chestnut trees of Frassineta are among the notable trees. There is another route connection on a pilgrimage stage: after Frassineta, the path initially follows the Alto Corsalone provincial road, then follows CAI 054 and meets CAI 053 near the ridge, which leads to La Verna.

Granaio di Narciso

A special cultural stop is the Granaio di Narciso in Frassineta. The small permanent private exhibition is housed in an old barn and collects examples of the material culture of Vallesanta. Visits are available on request at 340 6472250. The exhibition thus complements the churches, watchtower and trails with an insight into the region’s traditional objects and ways of life.
