Camaldoli: Hermitage, Forest and Nature Reserve

Camaldoli combines significant evidence of religious history with a distinctive forest and natural setting. Sacro Eremo and historical heritage

The Sacro Eremo di Camaldoli was consecrated in 1027. It is located three kilometres from the Monastero, secluded in the heart of the forest, at an altitude of around 1,100 metres. This setting makes the Eremo an independent cultural destination within Camaldoli: the visit includes the guesthouse, the church, the old refectory and San Romualdo’s cell. The church of the Monastero di Camaldoli houses a painting of the Nativity by Giorgio Vasari. The library of the Sacro Eremo is another historical highlight. It was built in 1620 specifically opposite the church of the Eremo, above San Romualdo’s cell. The manuscript library and incunabula were subsequently moved there. The history of the Antica Farmacia is also closely connected with the monastery’s guesthouse.

Forest, nature reserve and trails

The Camaldoli Biogenetic Nature Reserve is a biogenetic reserve within the Foreste Casentinesi National Park. It belongs to the Natura 2000 network and covers 1,169 hectares. Alongside the religious and historical sites, this places a clearly defined natural area at the centre, one that significantly shapes the character of Camaldoli. The Sentiero Natura Camaldoli is designed as an introduction to botany. It presents the trees of the forest, including the silver fir and the mighty Miraglia chestnut. Trail no. 7 offers a different focus: it runs around the Foresta di Camaldoli, is considered challenging and is suitable for hikers with some experience.

Information, museum and spiritual programmes

The park’s information point in Camaldoli includes the Museo Ornitologico with the “Biggeri” collection, exhibition trails and educational facilities. The information point also provides informational material, sells park publications and souvenirs, and enables excursions to be booked. During your stay, these offerings can cater to different interests: you can explore the birdlife and exhibitions or use the information as a starting point for further exploration. The Foresteria of the Monastero offers biblical, theological and spiritual retreats, as well as days of recollection focused on monastic spirituality. It also offers introductory and advanced courses in the biblical languages Hebrew and Greek. During Advent and Lent, the Foresteria offers days of recollection that are open to everyone, including young people. Camaldoli is therefore shaped not only by individual buildings, but also by an expressly spiritual programme of education and events.
