Rural character on the Corsalone

Banzena is an agricultural settlement in a hilly landscape. The southern side of the town is bordered by the terraces of the Corsalone stream. Banzena can be reached via the municipal road of the same name on the middle slope. Town Center Between Castle, Ring Wall, and Church

The historic town center of Banzena developed as a stronghold around the castle. The town center also contains evidence of an almost completely destroyed ring wall and a watchtower. Banzena’s church stands along the road and appears to have been completely rebuilt in the 18th century. A church in Banzena is also mentioned in a papal letter from Adrian IV dated May 2, 1155, as one of the 18 ancient subsidiary churches of the Pieve di Bibbiena. This mention points to the town’s medieval integration without making any further statements about current church functions.

Two Historic Route Connections

The old Via Romea dell’Alpe di Serra ran through the historic town center. Banzena can therefore be experienced not only through its buildings and traces of fortifications but also through an earlier route.
