4, November is the day of the national consolidation in Italy.
This date has been celebrated since 1992. It is known as “Anniversario della vittoria della Prima guerra mondiale“ – the anniversary of the World War I victory. Then the date was renamed into “Festa delle Forze armate“ – the date of the armed forces and in November, 4, 1977 the holiday received its present name. Despite the peaceful name the initial military sense of the holiday remains. This day the wreaths are laid on the graves of the heroes who died in the name of Italy’s defense.
The republic of Italy is a country which consists of 15 regions (Abruzzo, Puglia, Basilicata, Veneto, Calabria, Campania, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardia, Marche, Molise, Piemonte, Toscana, Umbria, Emilia-Romagna) and 5 autonomies (Friuli Venezia Giulia, Sardegna, Sicilia, Trentino-Alto Adige, Valle d’Aosta). Each of the autonomies is divided into provinces.
All the regions follow their unique traditions. Although the sense of the local patriotism is developed better than the feeling of the national unity. Tuscany is the vivid example of that. Tourists should keep in mind that it’s better not to admire Pisa and Siena in Florence. If someone shares opinions about Sant Antimo sights in San Gimignano that means he or she insults the local people. So it’s better to be a diplomat in Italy!
