Every year on the third and the fourth Sunday of August old Volterra invites guests to the unique Volterra AD 1398 medieval festival, «Giornata di Festa nell’Anno Domini 1398». This festival is a richly decorated and diverse in contents historic reconstruction.

Though the official dates of the festival are only two Sundays, in reality the holiday occupies much more time.

The festival opens up on Saturday. The beginning of the festival week is officially announced at night on the square of priors, Piazza dei Priori. The medieval entertainment program starts later, after the twilight sets in.

The historic center of Volterra as well as the Archeological Park located nearby becomes the main platform for the festival on the third and the fourth Sunday of August. The military camp where you can watch knights fighting and hawking will be dislocated close to the old fortress.

Ladies and knights, merchants and craftsmen, strolling actors and standard bearers walk around the streets of the town. Visitors of the town get a chance to buy original craft items, enjoy sounds of old music, and admire medieval dances. Dishes and drinks prepared by local recipes are here for you to still your hunger.

Keep in mind that while the «A Day of 1398 A.C.» festival, special currency named “big volterrano” or Il Grosso Volterrano is used on the territory of Volterra. You can change money at specially designated treasury places. By the way, if you have money left after the festival you can change it back in Euro during two months.
Between the two festive Sundays residents and visitors of Volterra will be busy as well. Festive games, ceremonial processions, alabaster contests are held on week-days in different districts of the town. Volterra lives by medieval traditions again.
