The commune of Monte Argentario has a rather different structure. Its geographic location is even more unusual. The commune embraces three settlements located relatively far from each other. They are Porto San Stefano, Porto Ercole and Orbetello.
Some time ago the lands of Monte Argentario used to be island, but now this piece of land is connected with the continent by three narrow necks as if it was tied to it by three ropes. These stripes of land emerged most likely due to river flows which moved a lot of soil, sand and stones with water streams. The middle neck expanded to such sizes that the town of Orbetello appeared on it.
Monte Argentario Bay entrenches the sea in the middle of the Tyrrhenian coast. The favorable position determined the fact that control towers with alarm system warning about threats of sea invasions were built right here. The defensive system of the bay started to develop in the XV century under the power of the Siena Republic. However, the real military force of this area appeared when the Spaniards governed here. The strongest reinforcement constructions were built on Monte Argentario Bay by the Spaniards.
Nature in Monte Argentario is mostly severe as the bay is made of rock material rising above the sea level at the height of 635 meters. Rocks and caves form most of the coast. Charming cozy gulfs hide among them. Coastal waters appeal to divers and yachting lovers. Those who prefer beach recreation will also love Monte Argentario. Splendid sand beaches stretch on the outskirts of Porto San Stefano located to the north, Porto Ercole to the south, and Orbetello spread over the neck. They are surrounded by olive woods, vineyards and fruit trees.
The economy of the region traditionally bases on fishing. Tourism has been the main asset for economic development of the area during recent years. Unusual virgin nature and sand beaches attract more and more travelers to this place.
Monte Argentario welcomes new guests.
