Orbetello

Orbetello is a town with a population of about fifteen thousand people. It got its name after the lagoon of Orbetello. The town has a very unusual location. It is situated on the neck which connects the cape of the Argentario with the continental part of Tuscany.

This land started to be developed as long ago as at the time of the Etruscans. Archeological excavations revealed ruins of a pier constructed by them. The Etruscans started to build the curtain wall of the town at the beginning of the IV century B.C., but it almost hasn’t preserved. However, you can get to the historic center through the town gates of Porta Medina Coeli and Porta del Soccorso.

Being one of the main town attractions, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the religious center of Orbetello. Built in the Roman style, it was partly reconstructed later. The Gothic style is seen, in particular, in the façade of the building.

While having a walk in Orbetello, it’s worth checking the architecture of Madonna delle Grazie Church and San Francesco di Paola Church. The governor’s palace is also worth examining. It is a former house of the Spanish governor-general with a charming terrace in the style of mannerism preserved.

The Guzman Powder Magazine is among interesting sites of the town. Ammunition of partisans who fought for uniting Italy was kept there in the year of 1860. Nowadays, the building has been completely restored and houses an archeological museum.

Every year, on the last Sunday of July, Orbetello hosts the town festival. In honor of the luxurious wedding of the archduchess of Austria and the King of Neapolis and the two Sicilies held in the year of 1768, a boat race is held in the lagoon of Ortobello, Corsa dei barchini in laguna.

Thanks to eventful history and beautiful landscape, the economy of Orbetello specializes mainly in cultural and beach tourism. Fishing is also developed on the outskirts of Orbetello. It is famous all over Italy for such species of fish as sea crucian and sole. The nature reserve of «Oasi di Orbetello» is located close to the town.

A vacation in Orbetello will meet all expectations, both aesthetic and gastronomic ones.
